Currently a Y2 manager at a tier 2 consulting firm (M7, YOE including MBA = 10) Just started the interview process for Google Ads S&O tier 5 opening. Is this the right leveling for consulting EM? Saw some sources say EM would be equivalent to L6?

Generally speaking, for non-engineering roles, assuming no relevant pre-MBA background, in this market:
- Immediately out of MBA = L4
- Manager = L5
- Principal = L6
- Above that = L7 which is near impossible with only consulting experience

Source: Conversations with several ex-consultants who moved to Google

like

McKinsey EM- L6
- Standard transition is EM (2–3 yrs post-MBA)- Google L6 Manager.
- Sometimes EMs get in at L5 if they are on the lighter end (early promote, less team leadership), but most land at L6.

Strategy& Manager- L5 or L6 (depends)
- If you’ve led teams and strategy engagements in tech, you can make a case for L6.
- Google recruiters often benchmark non-MBB managers a half-step lower, so Strategy& Managers more often come in at L5, unless they have exceptional scope (e.g., large client leadership, direct C-level exposure, or PE/tech-heavy projects).

How did you get an interview?

Thank you so much! One more q - When is the best timing to bring up the L6 conversation, and is it with the recruiter and/or hiring manager? Or is this something the hiring committee will do calibration?

like

You should bring it up with the recruiter so they know this is something you care strongly about. The recruiter should be able to give you at least an initial indication that either the role is only scoped for L5 or that it could be an L6 and they will make that determination after your interviews.

Need advice and pep talk because I’m certain I have chronic imposter syndrome :( Background on me, I have about 6 years of work experience post college but have gone through many companies because of layoffs and/or reorgs. With that, I’ve bounced a lot with different industries and have done different roles for a year max. My current role is about to be my longest (thank goodness, hitting about 2 years) but I feel like I’m not a SME in anything but I feel embarrassment for myself (Cont.)

I’d like to make enough to start investing in real estate to start generating passive income but can’t do that with my current salary.

Interesting. Let’s see if the uptick In cases continues to drive an uptick in hospitalizations and then in fatalities. Depends on how many of the cases are incidental or in very young people not prone to severe cases. But either way, look at the hospital capacity utilization figures! This is the untold story. Were we bending the curve to avoid unnecessary deaths due to overcrowded hospitals, or were we bending the curve to buy time for treatments and vaccine, or just to slow fatalities?

Did an interview yesterday that was supposed to be behavioral, but turned out to be more like the case interviews I did in undergrad. I think I showed off my business knowledge, but he kept harping on my lack of an official framework (vs me saying "I'd explore it from different stakeholder perspectives: customer, line employee, management"); pretty sure he considered it a failure.
