Those that make $150K+, how did you do it? I’m 27, I have an MBA in marketing and 5 years of experience with bidding, but am only making $75K. I want to break the six figure mark, but I don’t see many jobs in my area that pay that much. What’s a good industry to get into and how? I’d like to make enough to start investing in real estate to start generating passive income but can’t do that with my current salary.

Biotech and Pharmaceutical industry…come join us! We’re always looking for marketers. DM me your resume. I’ve worked in this industry for over 10 years and you just need to be fearless. I didn’t have biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience. BUT I knew that marketing is transferable.

likeuplifting

There are very few pharmacist or medical professionals in pharma these days, don't believe that you need medical background. There are more technical scientific and scientists, engineers and biochemical specialists in pharma, biotechnology.

Definitely move into tech if you want to break six figures. I personally jumped from $85k base to $115k base moving into tech. With bonus and RSU vesting I easily break $150k in TC.

like

RSUs are great. They essentially give you a bonus at the 1yr mark and then quarterly until they’re fully vested. A quick google search will explain how vesting works

D1, I'm in iniital screens with Deloitte at this very moment as the JD matches up very closely with my experience.

I didn't go to an Ivy
My graduate degree is in literature
Grades were maybe ok
The only consultants I know are the ones that come on board our company

Wouldn't it be insane if I had actually applied for a consulting gig? :)

First problem is that you’re in marketing tbh

likefunny

What do you exactly do?

How about trying to be patient? 5 years isn’t a long time. Focus on growing your skills and knowledge. I got a general studies degree. My first job in marketing was $42k. I know make over $200k after 14 years (started making $100k after 7 years). Hate to break it to you, but you didn’t need that MBA to make more money in marketing.

like

Ehhhh im 1 YOE and I make 75k without a 4 year degree he is definitely right to be trying to obtain more.

Tech tends to pay more. Within marketing, analytics positions tend to pay more.Within 5 years of experience in analytics, you can easily make atleast $120k

likesmart

This ^^^

With 4.5 YOE I’m at $265k TC
Was previously in consulting then switched to IB

When I left consulting I was at $190k

like

TC - Total Comp

Marketing isn’t a super high paying role unless you get into management. You can easily make over 100k in Project Management and Cyber Security

like

At 27 I was making $45k. Fast forward 19 years and I finally broke $105k at 46. 1.5 years later, present day, I’m at $140k. Let me tell you though - took a looooooong time. Plus I changed careers and went to law school in my 30’s. Was broke and struggled financially a few years after graduating law school (&during). I decided to try my luck in HR. Graduated law school in 2013. Started in HR as an assistant in 2016 making low $40k. Now Im a Director at $140k.

like

Biotech/Pharma tends to pay pretty hefty salaries. Although it can often be difficult to break into if you don't have a scientific background. You'll need a strong network to get interviews.

Go into tech sales (a ton of SaaS based marketing solutions out there to sell) or start your own digital marketing business — pick a niche or industry to go after and start calling/ networking for new clients. I’m in sales and exceeded that mark by 27, and in sales you can keep leveling up on base and the sky is the limit. Google OTE (on target earnings) for enterprise sales. That’s where you want to get. It’s a 50-50 split of base pay and a variable comp. The amount of money you make is up to you. You’ve got a great plan. We did it. My wife and I are both in sales and used our commissions/ bonuses to fund other projects to create passive income. Best of luck and god bless

like

This. I moved over to sales and love it. It’s tough work but it’s worth it (in my opinion). Not making the most ever, but there’s time to learn and grow. Making a lot more now than when I was delivering work.

It took me a while. From ages 22-27 I went from $50k-$70k and finally hit $105k at 28. At 29 (now) I am making $155k. Learning how to job hop and be good/great at specific skills is what helped me the most

like

Pls share more details what u do how u got paid better ? Thanks

I’m 28 now and just hit the 6 figures mark. Within the past year, I went from making ~$85k to ~$145k. All it took was switching jobs. However, I went from working at a small company in a niche industry to a large company in tech.

Take a risk and apply for jobs that you may think you’re unqualified for. That’s what I did. Eventually something stuck and personally, I’ve decided to never take a pay cut for any new job, even when I was laid off a couple months ago.

Ignore the people telling you to move or be patient. You can totally reach your goals - just may need to switch up industries!

I'd recommend looking in industries that are either highly regulated (pharma, medical, defense, etc.) or high margin (tech, banking, etc.); both tend to have higher comp. For remote positions, you'll have better luck getting a higher comp if the company is larger and headquartered in a high cost of living area.

As an example, my husband does marketing for a local pharma company, approaching 6 years of experience, marketing MBA, and ~130k salary. I'm in a similar spot - just not marketing so less relevant.

like

100% agree on the highly regulated industries. Haz waste management/EHS/Waste Management has big money in the right roles. Highly specialized. Recession resistant

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. I am a project coordinator but I do everything under the sun. Created project tracker. Is negotiating offers the norm now? I’ve been at my company awhile and at the time I was hired they said they don’t do negotiations, take it or leave it and they’d offer the next person. I do believe we renegotiate now, however I’m not sure if it’s the rule, the exception, or somewhere in the middle?
