Currently big 4 focusing on heavy provision and some compliance. Thinking about moving to a smaller firm. Thoughts on Weaver, Crowe, BDO, Whitley Penn, Worthum? Should I choose a role focusing on both or specialize in provision? I’m close to making director and thinking through a long term play balancing professional upside and quality of life.

For quality of life either go for a corporate tax job or try to do a tour in national of one of the firms. I don’t think your quality of life would be better at some of these. Some have done PE deals or a leveraged ESOP. If you are close to making Director are you close enough to stick it out a while? How much cred do you have with Partners vs starting over.

Weaver hasn’t done PE yet.

I have to think they are considering, just waiting for the price to be high enough.

I’ve been told I have wide support, could be this cycle, next year at worse. You think national at another big 4 over national at a mid tier because there’s less PE risk?

Either way National is a pure technical experience and sets you up great for Corporate. Big 4 would be better but even the next tier would be good. Less worry about PE in national office.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
