You should pivot and become a tax technologist
Yes and no. Often times “improvements” end up being changing workpapers over to personal preferences.
If what you’re improving can be applied to 90% or more of clients and is easy enough for an intern to apply it, it’s an improvement.
If your improvement is only applicable to individual clients, then there’s a good chance you’re not making the WP better and only setting it up to match your preferences.
Improve what process? I’m kinda same as you and sometimes I spend extra time to improve Excel WPs (rather than just following PY). Not just that I hate manually inputting numbers but also to make next year easier.
Not smart/tech savvy enough to improve tax software.
“Detail oriented”
See what I mean
I'm not sure if being detail oriented is completely related, but I'm like you in that I spend a lot of my time trying to figure out formulas, macros, and templates to make processes faster, but end up making the time spent on my current task long because I'm stubborn and refuse to just let it go. My team is fine with it because I do get my work done, just at the detriment of my own sleep, and I learn by doing. They also support me in whatever I try because it benefits them in the longrun so I'm thankful to have a team that doesn't shoot down my ideas and actually implements them.
