Thanks for the responses folks, I think I’m sticking with data engineering for now :)
Data Engineering worth more across all industries, but as a caveat they’ll want very specific skill sets for it
do you mean more like architecture/solution development vs data engineering? DE is a technical skillset and doesn’t really comp with analytics strategy
if you can, do the technical first before moving to strategy. as someone else said, it’s much easier to make that transition and you’ll have deeper knowledge.
I’m having the same dilemma. Data science vs. data engineering
Had to make the same decision 3 years ago. Engineering is more sustainable/stable, DS is more interesting but to me the non deterministic nature of it can be really tough, especially in consulting.

Market-wise, engineering has a higher avg demand and pay, while strategy has much better potential upside.
But.
Don't make this a comp decision. They're very different roles on the daily. Do what will make you happier and where your strengths will stand out, and you'll net better career growth.
Much easier to go from Engineer to Strategy than Strategy to Engineer. I’d opt to be hands on first then do strategy as you become more senior imo.
