Do you honestly think we’re looking at an extinction event here? The scientific literature doesn’t support that notion.
So in my view people assuming the planet will be ‘beyond rescue’ don’t know that they’re taking about.
Maybe we should look at the civilizations that have died and disappeared as those people were doomed because of refusing to change their cultural practices especially those associated with agriculture, soil conservation, deforestation, and water management. These examples are samples that can be used and applied to the world today considering how much the world population has grown and how much the planet has changed since this growth.
We need to change our language. The planet is in no danger. We are. The current iteration of its biosphere is, due to our 24/7 toxic way of civilization. By saying something like "save the planet" it shows we dont understand the problems, ourselves, the world and what is going on.
Global warming and Climate crisis is an aggregate issue combining many crises happening worldwide. It's mainly due to pollution, clearing and extraction; our overwhelming production and waste; and simply not acting congruously with the laws of Earth - a shared, living, finite system. This can be summarized by ecological debt. The environment pays the largest cost of everything we produce. The best description of climate crisis I've ever heard is Nature now telling us she's collecting on that debt, given us enough time to mature, and we now need to relatively quickly figure out how to live & coexist responsibly and harmonically.
Honestly, I don't think we and the human brain can collectively do it. It's inevitable we will suffer brutal collapses before humankind meaningfully learn its lesson and makes a genuine attempt at widespread, civilizational adjustments. There is too much inertia and too many livelihoods embedded in the entirely money-driven status quo.
The study of all this is called the metacrisis, if you haven't heard yet. I recommend watching The Great Simplification channel on youtube or tuning in wherever you listen to podcasts.
Better said, global warming & climate crisis is a symptom of our greed, feeling of dominion over the tree of life and this planet, and refusal to live harmonically and grant fundamental, intrinsic value to all other living beings also born to live on this planet and have an essential role in making life on Earth work.
Almost all solutions we see today are mere symptom treating and tokenized, feelgood distractions so to keep operating in a way thats self-beneficial.
