Opening cards will earn you the most miles…, I think.
Downside is that they come with a spend threshold to earn miles which may be more than paying the difference for you Italy tickets in cash…

Amex Plat has (or recently had) a 150k welcome bonus. Open a plat, hit the spend requirement, then transfer the points to Delta
Amex plat business
What about Delta card sign up bonuses? Delta Reserve has a 100k sign-up bonus, and that awesome "made from 747 metal" card right now, too. Spend the $5k + $550 AF for 105k Skymiles.
Do you have an Amex Gold? Grocery and restaurants code at 4x MR points, spend $3,750 there (do your research and get creative) and you get 15k MR which will transfer to 15k SkyMiles. If you DON'T have a Gold, then sign up for that too, same time as Reserve because their sign up is only $4k and you have 6 months to get it, for 60k MR for a $250 AF. You already have the Platinum, so Gold is an excellent companion to that.
I would downgrade the Reserve to a Delta Blue after a year (no AF, don't cancel as it hurts your AAoA) and sign up for a Delta Platinum at some point, which is a great card for Delta flyers who already have an Amex Platinum... Platinum Medallion MQD waiver + 10k MQM bonus at $25k spend (Reserve has 15k @ $30k) and pay with miles flight redemptions. Reserve has SkyClub but you already have that, and theoretically it gets standby/upgrade priority within your status (I.e. you will beat non-Reserve-holding Platinums as a Platinum but not any Diamonds) but for me that doesn't justify the AF difference over the Delta Platinum card.
So in short, it's going to cost $9,300 to do this, or $9,550 if you don't yet have an Amex Gold, in which case $9,800 gets you to 105k Skymiles @1.1 cpp + as many as 76k Mr @2.0 cpp = $2,675 in value (per Points Guy valuations, which of course you won't get on the latter if you transfer to Skymiles @1.0cpp).

Buy them
Pro
Miles cost $.035. That makes 120,000 miles $4200. I bet the ticket you could get with 120,000 points is less than $4200.

If you have a ton of Marriott points you can transfer those to delta too (3:1 ratio though)
Credit card that has big opening bonus and transfers to delta.
Amex for example
Already have AMEX Plat. Also, annual limit to purchase them is 60k miles.
Fly a bunch of times. The key is in the name “frequent flier”
Need it in the next 2 months…won’t be able to fly that much.
