Did anyone feel like they struggled in big law but hit the ground running in-house? I’m a mid level, not a bad associate and get decent reviews, but I always feel like I’m behind, treading water, and that everyone around me is smarter and/or harder working. I look at the level of mastery of the partners and seniors and just don’t know that I have the passion and love for M&A to operate at that level. I’m looking at going in-house and wonder if that feeling will go away when I do?

Young professional with 3 years of retail banking experience, 1 year of claims experience, and now roughly 6 months into insurance sales. Between selling in retail banking environment and every month of insurance sales regularly pacing 200% or over to goal. Loving comp but not loving the call center environment and hoping to move to another lucrative sales position with less non stop calls. Any suggestions?

Advice on managing up / enduring toxic deal teams? I’m at the point where my stomach drops any time I see something come in from certain people. Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. I say “are you sure this term is ok?” And often get “no.” They’re surprised because they never read them. Checking the temp to see what others experience, what might be normal. In house interview- I am going to hopefully the final round of interview to meet the whole legal team. I was asked about my availability, and it will take 5 hours if in one day. Should I split to multiple days? Will it cause any issues? Anyone on both sides can speak from their experience? Thanks!

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?

How long did it take you to find the right position the first time you went in-house? I am 5 months into it and regretting turning down the (lowball) offer I got a couple months ago.

Working Moms/Dads: Do in-house positions exist with flex time hours? I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important? Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand.
