Did anyone feel like they struggled in big law but hit the ground running in-house? I’m a mid level, not a bad associate and get decent reviews, but I always feel like I’m behind, treading water, and that everyone around me is smarter and/or harder working. I look at the level of mastery of the partners and seniors and just don’t know that I have the passion and love for M&A to operate at that level. I’m looking at going in-house and wonder if that feeling will go away when I do?

Yes. I just felt really lost in big law for some reason. I was genuinely questioning my decision to become a lawyer at all. Then I went in-house and it was like night and day.

4th year. I got really lucky and found a company that was looking for someone more junior.

Keep in mind skillset in house is very different. Also there are many types of biglaw attorneys as well (technical vs. commercial vs. strategic vs. rule or process experts and so on).

Yes. Feel like I struggled in big law, despite getting good reviews. Lots of burnout. Went in-house and although it’s busy, I actually look forward to the work each day. Huge difference. Work slightly less than big law, but pay is also slightly less. I’m happy.

A3- Yes, absolutely. Hated the work. Constantly felt overwhelmed and underwater. Also hated billing. Much better now!

Yes, I was a high performer in the corporate world before I was a lawyer. I went into big law and hated it. I regretted making the career switch for all three of those years. I went in-house in my third year and I absolutely love it.

Depends on the company and role you exit to. If you move into PE, the environment will be similar. Run of the mill F500 company doing mix of m&a and commercial work? Very different. a good chunk of corporate America is laid back

Just out of curiosity, have you ever started a new job and thought what the hell am I getting myself into?!?
If it was the wrong fit how long did you grin and bear it? 6 months / 1 year / longer?
Did it get better with time or worse? (For instance just a case of lack of know-how)
If you left did you find securing a new job difficult due to only being there for so little time?

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. I say “are you sure this term is ok?” And often get “no.” They’re surprised because they never read them. Checking the temp to see what others experience, what might be normal. I feel contract training in my clients’ future...

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?
