Do introverted teachers have trouble more in the career?

But I heard teaching is a great career path if you are an extrovert. I am an introvert and find it has an impact in certain parts of my work.

Do you witness introverted people at the job face more social challenges?

From what I have seen, Teachers who are introverts can do quite amazing! They are able to connect more personally with students because they do seek those more 1-1 interactions, even in a class of 30. The downside is, their social battery gets drained a lot faster and hard. Make sure you have support structures in place that will help you recharge on evenings and weekends. 💗

I agree about being drained!

Not necessarily. It depends up on the individual. I have always been introverted, but many people don't understand what that means. It doesn't always mean you are quiet, shy, and reserved ALL the time.

In my case, I have to put a lot of energy into my teaching day. I need breaks during the day and at home to recharge. Personally, I have found things have gotten easier over the years (now in year 31).

I have found that I (as well as other introverts in the profession) am sometimes more reflective than my extroverted colleagues. We see and observe many things that they don't. The challenge is to put that reflection into action and taking the initiative. We also are sometimes more attuned to "the details" by being more deliberate.

There is more to teaching that being a "bright, sunny personality in the classroom." I have emotions. I show happiness. I show frustration. But again, not always as extroverts do and administrators who write off introverts as defective or not fit to teach are doing the profession a disservice.

I am not knocking extroverts. We need all types in teaching. I am not trying to generalize about extroverts either. Everyone doesn't fit neatly into those two broad categories. Either way, you CAN be an outstanding educator.

I am an introvert, but I’ve been in classroom settings in front of 25 Italian students in high school when I worked in Italy, or in the US too. Just have practice with public speaking, it gets better each time. But I prefer teaching 1-1 anyways, or small groups. We don’t need to give a huge presentation, we need to listen to student and help.

I am an introvert and a teacher. I think that it helps in more ways than it hurts. Where it hurts is that I do not want recognition like popularity contests like the teacher of the year and so on. I could care less about leading a PD or club. I personally just want to teach my class and get students to learn. Me being an older teacher to start has also made me a better newer teacher. I guess now finishing up my 6th year I bring a different maturity to the teaching profession. I have been harangued ged into leading an academic club for the last 3 years and finally found someone to take over. I have been voluntold to be the leader of SIT in my school which I find abhorrent.

Being an introvert in the classroom certainly has helped me connect to certain students! I can always find my like-minded people. However, there are days when I am just done and there’s nowhere to go. Need to recharge is definitely viewed as a “on your time” type of thing.

I agree . It’s been one of those days too. I fele so drained.
