Do you accept social media requests from coworkers or managers? A manager sent me a friend request on both Instagram and Facebook. I ignored them. And then she asked me about it. What would you say?

Tell them you restict it to extended family. And you are happy to connect on LinkedIn.

like

Yes, tell them it’s strictly for your personal life and you don’t mix personal and professional. It’s never a good idea to accept work colleagues as friends on any social media—you never know why they’re wanting to get into your personal life.

like

Connecting with any current coworkers is always a bad idea, but especially your manager, unless you post nothing but kitten videos.

You can tell her that you have a policy of not "friending" anyone you currently work with. I've had to do that and it was accepted just fine.

likesmarthelpful

That is really out of bounds for a supervisor or manager. That could go terribly wrong for them as well as you. Either way, I would just be honest and tell them you want to keep your off work hours, off work. As well as they should want to do the same.

Don’t it. I once accepted a FaceBook friend request from a co-worker because I thought she was “cool” (we used to ride to work together sometimes). Next thing I know, my boss is telling me that she’s been hearing that I was talking negatively about work online. I never talked about my job on social media ever. Flash forward a month from the conversation, I was let go.

like

I would only keep it to a phone call or a text message

like

Absolutely not! Except if they follow my dog on Instagram. That's meant to be public and it's all about him. If you post anything that your supervisor doesn't like, it can come back on you. Also, forget complaining about ANYTHING at work. On top of all that, managers should NEVER be "friends" with their subordinates on social media. Recipe for disaster.

like

i don’t accept them - for good reason. Whenever I’ve started at a new company, I take a few minutes to look up people I work with and block them on any social media platform. This applies to clients and vendors as well. This helps eliminate hurt feelings or awkward conversations when they friend you, and you leave them pending.

like

I wouldn't do it. I accepted a co-worker's invite on FB. I had a very fun weekend and decided to take Monday off, which I never do. She went to the office manager and showed her my posts on FB. I was lectured the next day by the office manager about calling in sick on Monday after she saw how I had fun on the weekend. Tell them it's for family only.

like

I keep my social life friends and family separate from work

like

It really depends on the coworker. If they're the same level and we get along or I'm interested in getting to know them outside of work I'll accept. However I was always taught that Managers cannot fraternize, aka be friends with, their subordinate employees so I never accept a request from a manager unless I no longer work with them. Like many have said it's just too complicated and I'm not trying to get fired over my personal life, which is none of the company's business.

I'll also say when I was a manager/server/bartender all at the same time and my subordinates would add me it was 50/50 if I would accept and it did solve some drama (one girl said another girl called out sick but was actually with her bf and "posted it on snap" I was able to check her snap and see the context. She posted a week old snap saying she missed her bf)

It's also why I have 2 accounts on certain social media. One is for family/work one is for my personal/hobbies

Nope that’s the quickest way to get fired block them all and remove ur pic

likefunny

Oh my goodness…. Seriously??

I refuse to accept her request. For me, going to work is just a job; I’m not there to make friends. I want to ensure that they don’t intrude on my personal life outside of work and leave my private space undisturbed. She’s delusional for asking that question, thinking it’s reasonable. I always separate my work space from my personal life, and it’s incredibly annoying when they try to reach my private life. I only get paid for my work hours. If I still need to connect with work-related matters after work, including my co-workers, that means they need to pay me for that as well. What a childish request!

like

Please don’t consider. Most coworkers/ managers are silently trying to get a feel as to who you really are. Keep it work restricted. Asking to go to happy hour or other non work related activities is one thing but social media portrays your personality, family, friends and life these days. Ntm it may start office gossip. Some people don’t have good intent That would be a hard NO for me! My opinion!

like

You should always keep your life private from work

like

Do not accept it as long as you are both with the same employer. Its a trap!

like

I accept colleague requests on LinkedIn & I may follow a business on Insta. But my social media is mine & I don't accept on Facebook ect.

like

No, I do not. They are monitoring what you are discussing on social media and it’s none of their business.

like

I have a Split View on Social Media.

Facebook is to me for Family and Friends. Instagram by extrapolation.

LinkedIn is for work colleagues.

I am connected to work colleagues per the following:
- on LinkedIn immediately
- on Facebook and Instagram solely if they are an historical former colleague that I have maintained contact with

To your question…. Would I friend my boss on Facebook. My response is “no”.

As they asked you I would comment that I use Facebook for non work related connection with family and friends, but I am happy to connect on LinkedIn.

Something else …. As Facebook can scan your contact list I periodically review and block work coworkers so they are not prompted to invite me in reverse.

like

The block is a good idea. Too many people hit yes to those prompts

like

No. They can find you on LinkedIn.

like

Absolutely not. Thats a can of worms you do not want to open up. Always keep your private life seperate from work.

like

I don't until I no longer work with them. I don't see the point in spending 8 hours a day with them and then have them in my personal social media too. Once either of us have moved on from the company then I'm happy to have them on my social media too. Otherwise a LinkedIn connection works fine in all other circumstances.

like

This!!!!!!!!

I’ve had people bring me screenshots of their work friends social media more times than I can count. Don’t do it. Just tell them you don’t connect with co workers. It’s a fairly common personal practice for a lot of people, as demonstrated by these replies.

like

Absolutely NOT! My social media is personal and there’s no place for business. I only have ex-coworkers that were close that Ive stayed in contact with.
The only exception is LinkedIn but that’s pure business!
