Do you ever get frustrated with the pace of things in CE? I love that the work has a lasting impact, but seeing projects take years to get off the ground is starting to impact my motivation. Any advice?

Run run as fast as you can. Or get into construction where you can manage the work being done and see it done start to finish.

Are you saying to get out of civil eng ?

I have worked in companies that have small projects and tasks and ones that have a steady project over 3-15 years. I prefer the latter. Working on 50+ projects a year was a mess and you tend to be a cookie cutter mill

Unfortunately faster pace means more stress, more mistakes, and less personal time. Have you ever worked a design-build? You'll design something and they'll start building it in 2 weeks. Things will fly up, but you'll be working minimum 50 hours a week. There are some tradeoffs unfortunately.

That’s not the aspect about pace that frustrates me. I work on projects that will be built immediately when the plans are permitted. For design-build projects, we’ve already broken ground before the plans are finalized. Most construction schedules are 18 to 36 months for my projects. The aspect of pace that frustrates me is how rushed things get when trying to make a deadline. A lot of my projects are on university campuses, and there is a hard deadline that the building must be occupy-able by the first day of school. With prices inflating so rapidly, there is a push to get prices locked down with suppliers because even a delay of a couple of weeks could blow the budget. It’s madness sometimes, but so satisfying when it all comes together.

I do have one project that has been under construction since 2016. It is scheduled to be complete in 2023. Super excited about that. It’s a vacation destination, so I want to take a vacation there when it’s done.
