I started a new job last week and still have no idea what I am doing. My manager is never in the office. I am just going there and sitting on my chair and doing nothing. I am thinking of looking for another job. Any advice

I'm sorry you feel that way. Depending on the company, you might be expected to complete a set of orientation videos etc. If thats out of the wayn, you can share that youre on low utilization / have capacity for work. take initiative!

Ask them for work. If they don’t have any for you, ask if you can help others. Ask if there’s training you should be doing. Set up (at a minimum) a weekly call or meeting to get caught up and get your workload for the week. If you don’t know what you’re doing, are there other CAD Techs you could ask for help?

I was thrown right into the fire when I started my CAD position and was in a similar position as you - boss was never around. You have to take the initiative or you’ll sink.

like

Go around to the engineers in the building and ask them if they have any markups or cad work (make the rounds). At least ask if you can take a look at a set of plans from a recent project so you can familiarize yourself with the look of the product you will be expected to produce. If you find engineers in your building who have work, you can keep going back to them. Be sure you keep track of the project numbers and how much time you spent on each project. You have to get up and go get work. You can’t sit there and expect it to come to you. Sorry your manager sucks, but that just puts more of the responsibility on you to be a go getter and self starter.

like

They will give you a project when they come up. Ask HR if there are training videos while you wait. Ask other CAD or EIT if they need help. Introduce yourself around the office and ask people if they need help. Don’t forget to get a job number for billing time.

I’ve been working in public accounting (audit) for a year and I don’t enjoy the work and don’t see myself in this position for much longer. I’ve been thinking about going into marketing but stuck on how to get started. I know I have no prior experience, but since I’m early in my career and with taking some courses/certifications (Google analytics, SEO, etc.) to boost my resume, I’m hoping to make the switch. Any advice on where to start, what type of marketing positions I would align with, etc?

I am currently a year from finishing my PhD and was looking at VC's as a career path because I like to do meta-analysis of different climate change techs. I networked with VCs and one of them was receptive but didn't have the budget currently for a full time hire. They said they'd be interested in working with me to do a research paper over the coming semester, and was wondering if I could leverage this into a full time offer?
