Do you guys always insist on them giving the salary range first, or do you just give a high-ball number? I’m so tired of the dance where the first person to say a number loses. I told a recruiter my range today and I could practically hear her smile through the phone because I definitely lowballed myself compared to their internal budget.

I tell them my salary expectation is market rate, dependent on the details of the job, and ask what their budget is for the position.

He who gives their number first loses.

If you shoot too high, they might not move forward with you. If you shoot too low, you could be leaving money on the table.

I always ask for the proposed salary range first, can save everyone a lot of time if it isn't even close. But never do all your negotiating up front, you have the most leverage after you pass all the interviews and they want to extend an offer. If it's a field on an application where they can pre-screen, put your lowest number to increase your chances of being seen. That number isn't set in stone. If they're serious about you and you pass all the interviews you'll be in a much better position to negotiate. If they call you out on your original number you can always say "well after learning about the extensive responsibilities of this role I believe I'm worth this much". It's a game and they know it and if they like you they'll play along.

I always try to be the one that asks for their range. If they ask first I politely ask them if they don’t mind sharing theirs to ensure it’s in par with mine (most recruiters don’t mind) if I give them mine first and it’s above their range I try to ask other questions about their flexibility, if there’s a yearly bonus, benefits, etc.
It’s important that you know the bare minimum you’re willing to accept considering all the factors. I just accepted a role $15k under what I was making before, the title is a step back from where I was. I accepted because it’s remote, a great company and there’s potential for growth. Money is not everything and I’ll be fine financially (thank God). The market is very hard right now as we all know.
Your situation might be different!

I did that once thinking I would just quit when they did not give me a massive raise after a year. Raise NEVER came and I was number one (first) in sales. From now on I fight for high pay from the start and keep job hunting year round.

It’s a marketing trick called “anchoring” to get you locked in to your own salary range and feeling conflicted if you feel like you deserve more further down the line. Do your research and know what you’re worth. Search for the salary range for similar roles in your local area. Then give them a range that works for both of you. Remember, you’re both trying to hire you.

like

I ask them for their salary bands first then give a number in that range. If they don’t give me a range, I try to give an upper middle figure.

like

When the question comes up ask them what their range is. Try not to give them a number so you have negotiating room. If it’s on the app and they require it to be a number try to be reasonable- sometimes it helps to talk to a contracting recruiter because they really know the salary ranges in the area.

It's an important "dance", and after a few failures in this area, I am high-balling now.
