Performance reviews are not as important as regular 1:1s with your manager where you can frankly discuss your performance and what needs to improve so you can adjust and what projects you would like to do. If you are not having regular 1:1s with your manager, it might be a sign of a disconnect or they don’t care that much about you.
And sometimes even with regular 1:1s the feedback you’re given isn’t specific enough to make any real change. Like “great, glad you have criticisms, but I can’t change without guidance… like…how do you expect me to improve if you don’t at least give me a little push in the right direction?”
My manager hates performance reviews as much as we do. She is pretty relaxed in general and great to talk to throughout the year if we are struggling or want to discuss paths to promotions. Performance reviews are redundant and she doesn't spend a lot of time on them.
It’s really dependent on your manager. I meet regularly with mine and I continually ask for feedback throughout the year rather than just waiting for EOY performance reviews. The feedback is constructive, and she challenges me and pushes me to be the best version of myself I can be in this role, and is actively preparing me to be able to work at the next level so I will be well equipped for a promotion.
💯
It doesn't. I understand there might be a few managers out there who are diligent, and takes this seriously. But most of them just doesn't have the time or care enough to share with you something which would be valuable for you
Almost never. The real learning and feedback comes during the year. Reviews are just a box tick.
Yeah, I feel the exact same way. I feel like we both think of it is just a cursory requirement and not something valuable on either side. I don't really mind it because I'm not really that interested in learning how to do my job better 😆 I know my job very well at this point.

Performance reviews: 60 minutes of hearing “great job, but here’s what you could do better.” Every. Single. Year.

Totally get where you're coming from. I’ve had performance reviews that felt more like a checkbox exercise than a real conversation. Constructive feedback is so important, but it’s often missing or too vague to act on. I think the best reviews happen when there’s ongoing dialogue throughout the year not just a one time summary. Otherwise, it’s hard to grow or even know where you stand.

It's a bit of a mixed bag. In our reviews, we get told what we did well, what we need to improve, and have a conversation on what we want to aspire to. We never really map out how to do the "aspire to" question so the next year is a repeat conversation. The reality is there is too much work to do, too little people resources, so there isn't much to aspire to other than to get the work done.
I haven’t had one in like 2 years but I don’t really remember being given anything I needed to improve upon. It was mostly just about my raise
