I suggest the same I give to all expected salary questions:
"While compensation is important to me, I really want to look at the entire value of working at your company - what I get to do, who I get to do it with, the training and advancement opportunities, benefits, vacation; late nights, midnight releases or 3am incident response; and all the other things that go along with working at your organization, then I can share the salary I expect. At the moment, giving any kind of estimate would be uneducated on my part, so I look forward to investigating those areas and starting the interview process."
I pause as they struggle to write a number in their box, lol, then calmly yet boldly ask them:
"What is the specified salary range for the position?"
They always tell me then ask if we're in the right ballpark.
If it's higher than what I was thinking, I say Yes.
If it's lower, I may say:
"I was previously at a 160 base", or
"I'm fielding other offers in the 160-210 range."
How they respond after that let's me know how vested I want to be in the conversation and where they go in the follow-up queue.
Hope that helps! Be bold, you got this!

This is very helpful, thanks!
Don't give it to them
Ask them what the range for the position is
Thanks!
A good general piece of negotiating advice is never go first. As a candidate I work to have the company tell me their range, and as I hiring manager I work to have the candidate tell me theirs.
As a candidate something to the tune of “I consider the the entire offer and I am dependent on how you value the position. What is the range you are looking to bring someone in?” They usually just tell me at that point.
Thanks for the help 😊
I normally give them a very wide range for total compensation like 200 to 300 and say we can discuss further after both sides agree it’s a good fit. Earlier in my career when I had less negotiating power I would look up similar roles and tell them well the average for this type of position is x so I would anticipate that the total comp is around y. Does that seem reasonable? That would end the questioning typically. If they ask “but what do you want or need” respond that you want to be fairly compensated based on the salary range for the position which is Y and ask if that seems reasonable? Always end with a question. Good luck!
Thanks!
go to glassdoor and have a look at salary ranges. It might be so low that it is completely useless to even start interviews
In some cases is better to stay with a bit lower salary at your current position and wait for some take cool offer target than take the first offer
Thank you.
