I think the best leaders are those who have a mix of both. I've seen when the technical skills and the business skills are out of balance on both sides and it makes the working relationship difficult for both the manager and the person being managed.

Yea agree. For me, technical gets you in the door and business skills move you up.

I’m just blowing some steam. I work at a huge company and I see it
Leadership is a different skillset. The people who can embrace learning are usually the stronger of the bunch, combined with that technical know-how. I would say the backfiring comes into play with they are too set in their ways and won’t admit to needing improvement.
