Do you work at a big consulting firm where you work less than 50 hr work weeks? As a mid career professional/ leader, I mean. My friends at BCG work 65+, Deloitte 55+. What is your personal experience where you work? Would like to weigh my options before making a jump.

On the bench yes. Otherwise hard to find

I do my 40 and go home. Sometimes I do add on an extra 2-5 hours for the week but nothing more than that. I think most of the overtime also come from business development work in addition to client work. However I rarely take on business development work which is why I only try to stick with my 40.

Work can get overwhelming though and I know some people, me sometimes, who works a couple hours overtime because that’s just their working style. Most of my managers have not normalized overtime. I sometimes may do it if I’m really focused on completing something.

How crazy?

I average 40 at Strategy&. At the higher levels, the only thing that matters is results. If you’re bringing in revenue and growing the business, people don’t really care what else you do.

My 40 hours a week are pretty much client pitches

35? Is that even a thing in life science consulting?

Pretty consistently 45. I have some weeks where it’s more, but that’s not the norm. I’m at a senior manager level now, hit all my metrics this past year. Not easy to have WLB, but possible I think!

You’re sales. If you do well you can easily clear half mil a year ote. Also you can do dinners and other stuff quite easily so enjoy it.

Yep, 45, consistently

I advise against generalizing. My hours in consulting varied by client and project, and the level/role I had. When I worked in industry, I barely worked 40 hrs but my siblings worked 55+ for that same company.

Your decision should be based on the specific opportunity and growth potential, along with benefits. Sometimes working 10 hrs more a week short term can bring different positive outcomes. For me it was promotion, higher comp, and ability to purchase a home.

40-45 average here. WLB is really valued and the crazy weeks are peppered in but not the norm.

Hi all,
I’m currently working for a small technical consulting start-up firm. I make good money, have great benefits, and they seem very happy with the work I’m doing, so I know I could move up quickly. However, tech consulting is definitely not my dream job. I want to get into data analytics, and I have an offer from a big company to do just that. I’ve only been at my current company for about 8 months, but I don’t ever see myself loving this job. How do I know when it’s time to make a change?

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
