How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.

I do - most of my clients come from my network which I grew over the years. Few came through Dribbble / Behance. My profiles there are a bit empty, so I assume if I would upload some more quality work there I would get more leads.
I don’t have a strict schedule - I hop on a call once in a while with clients to discuss what we need to do and then do my work in the afternoon/evening/early mornings.
I think the most important thing is to be honest with yourself and calculate how much time you can spend on working on after-hours freelance. I overestimated my free time few times and it turned out that in order to finish a project I have to e.g. sleep for 5 hours for the whole week and do nothing but work - which is obviously not sustainable.
About the experience itself - I really love it. I run a design team in a product company on a daily basis, so I am not designing to much anymore, mostly managing design work of one product. Having some freelance projects keeps my mind fresh and creative and allows me to design something completely new once in a while.
Thanks! Glad you still are able to get that hands on work when you want to. I’ve been looking at transitioning to part time/contract work as I’ve transitioned to being a mom, so I appreciate the insight!
Upwork maybe a good source for side gigs.
Yes! A great resource, thanks.
