Does anyone else feel weirdly guilty about wanting to leave accounting? Like it’s some kind of betrayal of the time, the effort, the tests, the money spent, the sacrifices made. I tell myself I earned this career… but what if I don’t want it anymore? And what if all that sunk cost is keeping me in a job that doesn’t fit? I know rationally it’s okay to change, but emotionally? I feel like I’m quitting on a version of myself.

Personally I like the work, i just wish there wasn’t so much of it.

Why did you go into accounting in the first place? For those underlying reasons, can you achieve them in accounting but outside public or an entirely different profession?

The sense of guilt relates to you not feeling like you accomplished something or giving up on a goal. Realizing what that is will help you

Stay long enough to pay back your education, and then move on without guilt (and most importantly, debt).

Might want to stay out a while. It’s not pretty out there

For me, I like the work, I just wish the hours weren’t crazy, and there is always high pressure for month end close and process improvement. The problem for me is all the jobs are high tech with tight budgets. In addition, I’m sure there is some pressure of if I don’t perform, they can move my job overseas

A majority of society tends to stick around to things because they are influenced by "enough" people doing something similar. Hence, they start living someone else's life instead of theirs.

Think about what you want for yourself, what's important, what you value. Then, ask yourself. Do I have these things? Am I living by the things that are important to me?

What to do? What to do?

Should you discuss salary range with an internal company recruiter prior to setting up an interview? With external recruiters it’s pretty easy to talk about the expected range. I am trying to avoid wasting all of our time if i get to the last interview and they are expecting a salary that is too low for me.
