Get out of your comfort zone, I did and was rewarded well. Industry is amazing. Specially growth stage companies. They have young leadership and know how to take care of their people.
I think for me I have always wanted to work for a growth stage company, backed by private equity or venture capital. So I basically searched for the top PE and VC Portco career pages and found an opportunity, liked the team and decided to give it a shot.
I just left EY NYC assurance and so happy I did. To me it seemed scarier to stay too long and risk not being able to find an industry job I liked that also wanted me. Once you’re a manager or above it gets increasingly difficult to get an industry job because industry wants people with industry experience. If you know you don’t want to make partner and you want to go info industry, leaving now is probably your best bet (based on your experience level).
If you want something similar to assurance but I’m industry, look for a role that will be the main contact with the auditors. You’ll realize you know more than you thought you knew, get paid more, and wlb will be more chill. Consider technical accounting or a financial reporting role, I think these would probably best reflect your experience.
Agree with Manager 2 and am enjoying the role now.
OP, apart from getting different exposure, some wlb, pay, what made me consider to hop out is that at the moment I couldn’t picture myself being in public accounting (whether promoted or not) for the next 6-12 months hence am willing to try it out. If I eventually found industry doesn’t suit me, anywhere from the public accounting industry would be happy to take me back.
Come to EY, I can refer you

So it’s scary at first when you leave something you’ve know for so long, but new aspects of a new job really don’t take that long to get used to. Also, think about the money/benefits that come with switching every so often. I’ve found this to more than compensate for having to relearn the admin processes.
Thanks, I know I have to just do it. Honestly just don’t know where to start, I’ve been with EY right out of college. Did you go through a recruiter/ your connections/ your own research?
Maybe try talking to a life coach or therapist. To survive PA for 7 years at an "above peers" level says a lot about your ability. Just gotta get out of your head & change your thinking.
Oh yea, definitely easier said than done. We all struggle in that arena to some extent. Know it's not only you 😀
I think you’re at the best time to switch right now as an M2/3 as far as title and pay bump. I saw your concern about industry at a different post and can tell you that I left for a totally unrelated industry. I just didn’t highlight industry on my resume and focused on the specific skills and experience I have relative to accounting issues, guidance, project management, etc.
Come to grant! I can tell you from personal experience people are generally happy here. I can’t say everyone cause that’s wouldn’t be true. But in general people at grant are happier than big 4.
I started at a large national but moved to grant for better clients, resources, and culture!
If you’re above peers then you’ll be fine somewhere else. Don’t lose your confidence
I appreciate that! Doing the same thing for almost 7yrs just has me doubting being able to switch careers, but I just need to spend time to find the right next step.
You might try switching groups/roles/firms if you are doing well in B4. Sometimes that's all that is needed.

Internal transfers are a trap. Unless you are really lucky, they will take advantage of your vulnerability. If you really want to do TAS work just switch firms. You’d make your life 10x easier
Just moved out of PwC after 5yrs and felt the same way.
Been with Protiviti for the last 2 months and it's miles better! People are way nicer and most of my coworkers and client teams are exbig4 so that could be an option. Also, the knowledge transfer was pretty seamless.
Ping me if you are ever interested :)
I’d look into some of the other national firms. A lot of them tend to have a more laid back culture and less politics as well as SLIGHTLY better hours. I know you can probably negotiate a nice pay bump and some have even upped their referral bonuses so I’m sure you can find someone to split with you.
You are better off at EY if you want to switch to advisory or stay in audit. Don’t go to Grant.
