Does anyone feel like partners in small firms give their office manager/head paralegal too much authority? New attorney in a small firm, I’ve been criticized and critiqued more times from the office manager than the partner I feel like. I’m so confused. One thing that is a crisis to the paralegal is not a crisis to the partner, can anyone help me understand this dynamic? Is she a mouthpiece? Why won’t the Partner just talk to me?

Paralegals/officer managers are the real bosses in small law...and you don't want to piss them off in big law either. Listen, be grateful, bring them little gifts and it'll all work out.

Oftentimes, the partner will dispatch the legal secretary or office manager to be the tough guy. Listen to the tough guy :)

Agreed, disrupting the chain of command is a recipe for disaster and is confusing for all parties

This happens in government too. Youll have a 60 year old office manager who emails like an 8 year old, plays strong favorites with management, still enforces decades old expired policies and acts like basic job responsibilities are an egregious impostion. You basically just have to learn to work around them and their posse, and find the contract paralegals and admins who are actually required to do the work and hope they can fit you in with all of the others work as well, since again, they're the only ones who actually work

I had one who would hold these insane spiraling 3 hour marathon calls that were supposed to be like a 30 minute call about a specific topic, like on-boarding a new employee and instead they'd just start talking about printers and ordering printer paper and their husband's back and then a story about on-boarding someone who quit like 8 years ago and then hold the printer conversation again and so on and so forth. And at the end they still wouldn't do anything they were supposed to, but they were unfirable so what could you do but wait for them to retire or die

I thought I would ask this here too because some of you may spend a lot of time at the Daley center and I’m dying to know the answer to this pressing concern.

The tree at the NW corner of Dearborn and Washington at Daley Center. WHY is it always covered with thousands of birds. I could walk across the loop and not see a single bird but when I get to DCP, every day, rain or shine or heat or cold, thousands of birds. What is up with this tree? Why is it special?

How are 1st year litigation associates dealing with WFH? I’ve been having terrible anxiety/panic attacks, and pretty sure my billables wont exceed 110 for April. I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
