Arrive early. Preferably before 6 a.m. Ease into the day. Drink coffee. Read NYT. Play some mahjong. Maybe take a quick jaunt around the office to get my blood flowing. Put some Miles on and get ready for the day.
Then, my very first work-related task is to prioritize my day and prep for any meetings I may have. I tend to overprepare.
Once I'm settled in, I always check client feedback.
After reading client feedback, I close my office door, dim the lights and self-flagellate with a belt until I black out. When I come to, I compose myself before anyone else arrives and pretend I don't hate my job.
Enthusiast
I used to do a daily exercise of finding the word of the day and then I would design something with type and imagery. I’d make sure I went as fast as possible and I’d pump out as many different versions as possible. Then I’d post everything on social. The next day I’d do that word of the day but in a wildly different style from the day before.
Helped me get fast, not overthink the work, and get over being shy about showing my work online.
I have a beer on the toilet the minute I get home
I do the Don Winslow approach - write in the morning, walk in the afternoon, write in the evening
I got an MBA
Did morning pages on personal projects for a long time. Built the muscle for work.
I freak out 24 hours a day. That counts, right?
I used to write a 2-3 pg stream of consciousness doc every morning to brain dump. It kinda helped.
