I have no freaking clue where 90% of the people I work with went to school.
I went to a good school. All the lawyers I work with are better than me. I feel like I hear them talking about how astonished they are about how much I suck even though I went to such a good school. The only time I mentioned my school was in my resume otherwise I don't talk about it. Maybe I'm just delusional and it's my insecurity about my own deficiencies but I feel like I hear them.
I also went to a good school and get a lot of credit for it in ways that don’t make sense, including a reputation as a great writer and researcher (I’m only so-so) and opportunities to do appellate work without a clerkship, etc.
I did not go to a good school. My impression is that a good school may get you in the door because certain expectations are attached to having attended said school or the alumni network from that school is strong. However, once in the door where you went to school is mostly irrelevant in all but the most white shoe old boys club circles (which candidly I have no interest in being a part of). That said, if a given attorney leads with their educational pedigree and does not have the expected professional acumen or work product expected of a graduate of a particular school it will likely lead others to be surprised. I experienced this with a summer associate this year, who is attending a very good school and (at least for me) produced surprisingly poor results.
That's true, in my case it might be more my insecurity, as I exceeded expectations at my annual performance review, and although I listed my school on my resume I had other applicable professional experience that I led with. I also try my best to fix deficiencies that people express they see in me.
