I’m a new third year associate working at a satellite office of a midsize firm. I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to truly get good at my job or the multiple areas of law I’m asked to practice. What are some things you’ve done to gain confidence in your practice area?

Gave up on the idea that I’d ever have enough time to be as competent as I want to be. You’ll learn along the way. I do read something relevant to my practice area for about thirty mins every morning. Helps me get excited about the work I have ahead of me and eases me into the day with the bonus of some extra knowledge.

I've just accepted that I won't be truly (brilliant level) competent at my area, just that I finish whatever I need to finish. So far it's been working okay. But I've also accepted that law may not be for me and am hoping one of my past or future lives lived/will live out my other dreams

Try to specialize if you can. Makes life so much easier, and those late night requests less annoying and time consuming.

I know you work a lot of hours but if your firm subscribes to Practical Law their content can be very helpful to read. Annotated form documents, short articles that clearly explain topics. All written by former big law attorneys. I always recommended juniors associates to use. Many find it helpful.

I am sure this is a question with an obvious answer, but does anyone else just feel absolutely trapped in a job they hate because of their student loans? I’m three years out of law school and I still have $160K in student debt despite making aggressive payments. I work in a larger firm (not big law per se, but 250+ attorneys and big for the market). I am pretty unhappy with my job the vast majority of the time, but I feel like I have no options. $160k at 6% and 7% interest cannot be ignored.

I’ve been negotiating a settlement on behalf of a client. OP is a major corp. we’ve gone back and forth for months, almost a year. Should I communicate this to client before pushing back against OP’s rejection of the mod?

I’m a big law attorney and thinking about getting my real estate license (brother is thinking about the same thing, so we’re thinking to go into some RE investing together). Thoughts? Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. Plus outlook does weird things sometimes like combines conversations so I only see most recent sent item in that convo. Alternatively, do you have a good way confirming you caught all of your email time?

I’m at a midsize firm in the Midwest and I’ve noticed that we’ve hired multiple associates who all graduated law school the same year. Some are coming from clerkships, other firms, etc., but they’re all on the same graduation year. This feels like it’s setting up a squeeze down the road for these folks with respect to partnership. Is there something I’m missing or is this something that will cause issues down the road?

Anyone else get frustrated when the partner brags about their billable hour amount for the month? Like congrats, you get to bill .2 for each piece of mail. You also get .2 for every letter your secretary types up as a "form letter" you never even look at. As an Associate, I don't get those easy/automatic hours.
