I got epidural with my first. I was in labour for 7 hours and nowhere close to the end. I got it mainly so I can get some rest. I think if I had progressed enough, I would have skipped it. But after 7 hours and 1 cm (yes!!! ONE CM after 7 hours!!!!), I was afraid I’ll be too tired to push if I don’t get rest. Got it, took a nap and woke up around 6 to increasing pressure, delivered by 7:30. No side effects or issues and I would get it again if the situation calls for it.
I would say it’s not just about pain management but also keeping your stamina. You don’t want to be labouring for 20 hours and then too tired to push and get a c section anyway.
Btw I echo the pain management point above. Get some tools for pain management, walk around, get a birthing ball. You’ll feel better if you’re on your feet and walking around through labour. On your back on a bed is really not the most optimal. One thing to keep in mind, once you get epidural , you can’t walk. You have to be on the bed with little movements and a catheter. Your legs will likely numb out, so it’s not safe to walk around.
