No, cause it's a crap cert.
Don't have any certs or MBA but I'm a manager.
Cause PM's are not special, it's a general skill we all have. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/worker-new-commodity-stuart-hamilton
The "knowledge" required to pass the PMP exam is useless, too much common theory and unrealistic practices, and frankly outdated and not suitable for modern technology projects. The cert itself is not completely useless, since you will be surprised a lot of clients/jobs like you to have it, more of a checkbox for screening.
No, but possibly different opportunities.
Agreed, it is worthless and a lot of ppl that have it are usually bad at project mgmt. if you switch to some small boutique staffing firm, they love the certification. I got it and didn't take any classes or study - just borrowed a book and read it for an hour before the exam and passed. It is a pain to take continuing ed and pay them to renew when you get nothing from it
^ not true
Loll wtf, EY doesn't require any certs for any level outside of assurance.
By the way, if your employers willing to sponsor, CSM is another cert which I think it is better than PMP. It is even easier (just take 2 days of classes and pass a short exam at the end, no study required at all) And the "knowledge" you get actually is more valuable and applicable for modern projects. Downside is the class is pretty expensive so sponsorship is important.
No, not at the consulting level despite what PMI says.
@Ey1 I do not think PMP is crap. Care to elaborate?
I have a PMP and even I think it's worthless. Anyone can get it, questions are common sense and mostly around conflict management and soft skills.
BA1 I have see both sides like the PMP (I am commercial but I also live in DC area so I do know a lot of govt jobs like to have it) Just like I've said it is more of a checkbox for interview screening. It's not a "must-have" in most cases but "preferred" qualifications. I also know some employers will even push you to get it within the first year of joining. Won't give a pay hike but certainly open more staffing opportunities to some degree, so I won't say it is completely useless and recommend to take it if one have time (a quick and relatively cheap/easy way to show continuous improvement)
Not disagreeing but why is it crap? I don't have one but have considered it.
I have one- why is it crap?
You need a certification to make manager at EY. PMP qualifies as one of them if you're not getting a CPA. If it's within your first year, if you get a certification then you qualify for a bonus.
It helps with job opportunities and since clients want it. Nice to have, not must have
^*some
Do commercial clients want the PMP or only gov't?
