OP - let your project management know. It is common for internal audit to perform a pre-implementation review of major system implementations for precisely the reasons you mentioned. Best to cooperate and give them the data they request.
Regardless of what/why - direct auditors to the proper contact, and let that person know as well.
OP, you need to let your client contact know and ask them on how they would like you to proceed. Nothing pisses the client more than consultants having conversations with their audit departments without them knowing, and then resulting in some findings. Management on the project needs to make a decision on whether they’re ok with you being the point of contact or they would prefer for someone internal to be presented. I NEVER have conversations with IA without my client there or CC’ing them at the very least.
Reaching out about a project you’re on? I would direct them to your client contact and also give them a heads up, and then it’s upto them on how they want you involved.
I’ve been on projects where a client’s internal audit team wants to do an engagement audit. They should be directed to your project leadership and client leadership teams to determine what their scope is, and who should be coordinating the process to provide the information they are seeking.
Generally it’s never a good idea to “push back” on auditors. The VP of Internal Audit typically reports directly to the corporate CFO with a dotted line to the Board; not a function you want to piss off as they can make your life quite miserable.
What are they reaching out for?
Not doing an engagement audit per se. They want to better understand the implementation that we are overseeing and whether the appropriate measures are in place to govern the project.
