Yikes. I think I would be completely turned off by any school that asked this question. As educators I firmly believe we should be encouraging our coworkers to grow and become better, and sometimes a new opportunity opens up somewhere else. My answer is yes absolutely. How could it possibly benefit me to stay in one place when there’s another better place to be? If a better candidate walked in to interview right after you I can assure you the district is going with the better candidate.
I’m passionate about teaching and I do feel like it’s a calling, but at the end of the day it’s just a job. I would never prioritize my well being, my happiness, my family, or my health for it.

Well said! I completely agree. That question seems like a big red flag.
That's a bit of a trick question, isn't it? I would be considering that a massive red flag if I was asked that in an interview. If I had to answer, probably something like "I know that the grass is not always greener. I would not leave a job I enjoyed."

It is very tricky!! I think your response is great. Best to be diplomatic but make it clear you only stay if you enjoy the work.
Strange question. I probably would have responded, "Why would I be looking for another position?"
Mentor
Exactly! It's like they're trying to gauge your loyalty but they're not seeing the reason why you're there interviewing in the first place.
Does come off as a red flag question in my opinion. I would probably say something like I am open to growth but not looking to jump out at the first opportunity. Now in reality, that may not be totally accurate, but that is probably the answer they are looking for.

I agree it is a red flag. It may be a small test of loyalty but I have a hard time interpreting the motives of such a question.
I think my answer would turn it back on the principal! I would tell her/him that I would give my answer after their honest answer was given first. Always put questions such as these back on the interviewing person/people.
Mentor
Great answer! It would be beneficial to turn that one right back at them to see what they'd say.
That’s an odd question. Even if the answer is yes, I’m not going to admit at a job interview.
I agree, turn it around….do you have opportunities for growth here?
Mentor
It definitely seems like you're forced to answer yes, but I love how you can say that and then emphasize that you expect there to be growth available to you.
if I was satisfied with my current position I wouldn't be looking for other opportunities.

Haha well said!
My response would be why would I want leave. Are your employees satisfied here? How are working conditions here?
