Sadly, this is very true. As a manager I make it a point to let people know I see the extra effort they are putting in and the job that they are doing. I really feel like more praise in these companies would make a world of difference.

That feeling is completely valid. When recognition feels inconsistent, it helps to focus on standards you set for yourself and the skills you’re building, not just who’s watching. Still, it’s okay to want fairness—sometimes it’s worth advocating for your work or finding an environment where effort is seen more consistently.

I don’t look for recognition from others. I have my standards and always work to those standards. And if I get recognized, I get recognized. If I don’t, then oh well. Favoritism is a different story though…

That’s tough. If you’re having regular check ins with your manager maybe you can bring up all the great work you’ve been doing and telling them how it ties to your overall goals.
