There are some dispatch stories that I don't have the luxury to share here but have stuck with me throughout all this years. It especially hurts if you do find out the outcome and it was something bad that you could have prevented.
It is often a traumatizing experience for most of us in the field. There's this one story that particularly sticks with me, the case of the Turpin children. That dispatcher saved those lives by being aware that something was wrong, but more than that the child was so brave to go out despite knowing nothing of the world outside.
Yes. You just have to be ready anytime and be surprised. Expect the worst but hope for the best indeed.
Yup. From being comfortable in the station to being in the most exciting time of your life real quick. No one really knows what happens next. lol
Yes, it is always hard not knowing what truly happens in the end. We always hope for the best.
I have been looking into counseling because of this job. I don't plan to stay much longer because of the impact it's had on my mental health but answering distressful calls all day can be really heavy
This is a tough job for an empath. I'm up all night worrrying about some of these people some times
I try to not even think about what happens next
I feel you, OP. The rise in PTSD cases bears testament. It takes a really high degree of emotional and social stamina plus a great support system in your off-work life to keep up.
And you never know what the call will be until you answer it. It's a great career but a demanding one. I'd advise that you speak to a professional.
My dispatcher friends are really traumatized by some incidents. I once wanted to try it. But seeing them now makes me think twice.
Couldn't agree more. They've been through some traumatizing events. I am so proud of them.
