Established NYC partners living outside of Manhattan who can afford parking, tolls etc...
Is time convenience the only reason you still commute by train?
Why no car service or self driving vehicle to enjoy a quiet, clean ride?

Because I could never justify the cost versus taking the train or just driving myself.

Not every year but my average year is 7 figures.

Because rich people can be the cheapest (and stingiest but that's another topic) people.

Our CEO with at least $100mm NW is the only exec who commutes by car service. Everyone else takes the trains from NJ, Westchester, or Long Island usually with a beat up backpack.

I occasionally worked with a partner who had a $10+m condo in the city and loved cars, but wouldn’t pay for a parking garage. They would rather regularly move their car due to alternate side parking. Very puzzling to me, as it seemed like a big hassle to save less than $1k per month, but that might be why I don’t have a $10+m condo.

Express train is faster and I can work on the train. If I drive myself it takes about 10 mins longer and I can only do calls. A car service is probably the same amount of time for 10x the cost. If it’s bad weather (raining or very cold) I will drive to avoid mass transit.

Why would you subject yourself to midtown traffic

like

Driving/being driven during rush hour in NYC is on par with the 9th circle of Dante's inferno. I'll take the subway and its questionable smells over that anyday.

like

I also feel like you get more car sick when you try to work in a car versus a train. Not a partner but just a guess

like

NYC taxis also smell horrible usually (leather and sweat - ew) and the commute is so long. Save yourself. Take the train.

At my old firm every single partner who lived outside Manhattan drove to the office (downtown). And several partners who lived in Manhattan took a car every day. Didn’t realize that was outside the norm, maybe a downtown vs midtown thing

Good point. More congestion and less good parking opportunities in Midtown. And the trains probably land right into Midtown? That was given as a reason some firms would not leave their old building for an upgraded one further out.

Additional Posts in Big Law

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

Had an epiphany recently.

Why do I work so much?

It’s because I have little family and few, if any, friends. Had a rough childhood. My way of making an impression on others has always been through work.

By working, I do something I’m good at and makes people appreciate me, while covering for my loneliness and feeling of inferiority. It’s sort of the only thing holding me afloat.

When I’m probably never going to have friends or a family of my own, becoming partner is the next best thing.

Big law literally saved my life. I was working for the government and being sued by creditors and in a deep, dark place. I wasn't even able to afford my Ube transfer application on my own. I've been at my firm for 3 years now and my life has completely changed. I was so close to declaring bankruptcy it's not even funny. I understand why people rag on it but some of us would be in a really bad place if we weren't here

Thoughts on getting fed government jobs? I'm a first year associate in a specialized transaction group in DC and I fucking hate it. I had an internship at a federal department in school but after that went 2L SA/firm. Any hope of finding something? Right now my plan is to just start spamming USAjobs and hope something eventually sticks.

To those at V25 firms, how do you view your London office in terms of the quality of work we get and overall importance to the firm? Like is there a perception of us being a step down or ancillary to the big leagues of NYC or not? There’s generally a perception here that L&W and K&E are the only US firms where London can even begin to compete with stateside in terms of generating l work organically but would be interesting to know what you all think? Be brutally honest.

How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? But actually how do you bill your time? (and don’t say contemporaneously)

Say you spend 2 minutes answering an email to a client earlier in the day and then 3 minutes on another email later in the day. Do you bill 0.1 or 0.2? More importantly, how do you keep track of that throughout the day?

From a vault ranking perspective, is it safe to assume V100 is all sweatshop big law? Reason I ask is because I want to lateral but not to a gunning big law firm — want to stay in big law but not at the ones at the top of the food chain like I am now. Want some sort of work life balance and wondering if the “lower ranked” big law firms offer this? Could just be my fantasy though…
