In my opinion it is blown out of proportion. Sure the profession is changing and it may eliminate some jobs with admin time savings but at least for the foreseeable future there will have to be auditors reviewing the output of whatever AI tool is being used otherwise how would cover the risk of inaccuracies in the AI tools
There has to be somebody (pun intended) accountable for the work. AI will change a lot of how we do the work, but there still has to be somebody responsible. I believe that will keep jobs open, maybe fewer than before, but the entire profession isn’t going to be eliminated anytime soon.
AI will be like ERPs and Excel was for accountants. Makes us more efficient. More leveraged with the tools it provides us.
I have had a few conversations with people not in the field and they’re like “what are you going to do next year when AI takes your job?” Not happening!
The term AI is misleading. It’s not intelligent and can’t think like a human. Most of those pumping the AI topic are financially benefiting from people buying into it. It’s great for certain things but it’s not a human replacement (for most jobs) and in a lot of cases like accounting it never will be. We are at a plateau IMO and this plateau could last years or decades with only moderate improvements.
I don't think AI is going to eliminate our jobs. I think if anything, it will help make them easier. AI cannot replace some of the things that humans can do like building relationships.

I don’t think it’s going to eliminate jobs, you’ll always need accountants. But, and it’s a big but, we don’t know just how big and powerful AI is going to become. It might be a case of having less staff and those staff members simply overlooking what the AI tools are doing.
