I had this happen to a couple of friends. The firm gave them one more opportunity to take it, and when they failed again, they got fired. One friend was lucky enough to stay on the website until they passed the third time. Once that friend passed, they got a recruiter and ended up at a V-50. I would say landing on your feet definitely depends on your market. Not seeing a lot of firms in my current market hire first to second years. Junior to them is really a third year.
Your friend seemed to land a big law offer because of their previous offer with the first firm.
Any advice for first years not in big law but want to be eventually? It seems like the summer associate pipeline is largely the market.
Short answer - no. Longer answer - probably firm by firm basis…but most firms allow those who didn’t pass the opportunity to pass in February. Unless a firm has several people fail on the repeat time, chances are they won’t be looking to hire a first year after the February bar. Most firms have pretty large 1st year associate classes, so especially with the current market, they will be fine with whatever they have.
