Every year it’s the same story: I get glowing reviews, a “we value you so much” and a 3% raise that barely beats inflation. Meanwhile, new hires are coming in with higher starting salaries. I’m loyal, high-performing, and quietly wondering if I’m being taken for granted. When do you decide it’s time to walk away, not because you hate your job but because they won’t pay you what you’re worth?

I stayed at a company for years out of loyalty and kept getting those "excellent work, here's your cost-of-living raise" speeches. It wasn’t until I interviewed elsewhere that I realized how underpaid I was. Sometimes it’s not about disliking the work—it’s about realizing your loyalty isn’t being matched with investment. That was my cue to move on.

They have higher hiring budgets because fresh energy and ideas are always valued. The current employees are usually split into low performers, mid performers, or high performers, or a percentaged variant of that. There are less people in that high performing bracket, and those are probably slated for succession purposes, so they get the higher raises or promotions. The low and mid level performers will either get a COLA raise or even nothing at all to encourage them to quit. But by and large, the big money goes either to high performers slated to become managers or directors in the future, or to newcomers that are meant to replace the current low or mid performing employees.

Unreliable coworker help - There’s a coordinator on my team who assists me and the other strategists but literally every time I ask her to help with something she says yes & then waits until the last minute to tell me she wasn’t able to do it/makes up an emergency excuse. Trying to be understanding but this is getting ridiculous- she/parents/dog/boyfriend are sick (8x), forgot about another urgent project (10x), WiFi is down or power is out RIGHT when I ask for help (5x).
