I don't have practical advice but secondary trauma for attorneys isn't talked about enough and it's under-supported. Good for you for recognizing and making a change. If a colleague reached out to you, it sounds like they think your background is an asset so give it a shot. Might be a big adjustment but also worth it
I had a couple years of biglaw commercial litigation background, moved for two years to a high end defense shop (catastrophic injuries, death, huge construction cases with corresponding high rates). I got a reputation for being really good at child death cases. This was hard. I had kids the same ages as many of the kids involved in my cases. I went to a small law firm focusing on traditional commercial litigation and the experience in defense helped me a lot. I was much more comfortable in depositions and at hearings because I had handled so many. I had experience negotiating a lot of settlements. I was way better at using the rules of civil procedure and was comfortable in both federal and state courts. Overall, I think my experience was very helpful, but I couldn't handle the death of children being part of my everyday experience.
