Assuming you don't already have a clearance, you're essentially going from zero to hero. So, a lot.
5 years should be fine. Don't try to hide anything or the outcome is worse. Be truthful on SF86 cause that stays with you forever, and if you change an answer later in process it won't look good. I told them about my friends Mary Jane and the abominable snowman and have a TS/SCI. My use was 7 years prior to poly date, probably 5 from the time I first filled out an SF86 for a secret.
One more question! Any thought on how much o e would be worth over the next five years? Extra 100k? 500k?

It only matters that you're in process
To answer your question: it involves a full documentation of your life to date. Employment, education, personal references, etc. They will interview you, the references you list, and some references you don't list to assess integrity and vulnerability to blackmail. This process will be tougher if you have extensive foreign travel, foreign contacts, or problems with money.

Foreign travel only matters if you are in Middle East or Russian, they don't care about your caribbean vaca. They do check every box though. Showed up at my apartment 2 years after I had moved out and asked the residents if they knew me.
