No first year hits their hours
If it makes you feel better, every year there are plenty of posts both on here and reddit by a concerned first year who hasn’t fully ramped up yet. Enjoy the downtime while it lasts - it will inevitably get busy and you will miss when you were billing less than 80 hours a week.
Would say as long as you get to 1600 billable for your first year, you’re likely fine. If you’re on a number of matters, you’re doing the right things. Enjoy the downtime, pick up some pro bono or training non billable work (some firms give credit for these things too) and trust the process.
Super normal. Focus on doing a great job when you are staffed - make sure you’re checking in with your teams and it’s clear you’re available and interested in the deal. Ask to shadow calls, read all the emails, etc., and in any downtime do pro bono and articles / PLI stuff. Don’t appear checked out just cus you’re slow, and it’s fine.
I billed 1100 my first year in a down market and have been fine. It’s certainly firm and practice group dependent, but you’ll probably look back and laugh that you were ever worried.
