I worked at a toxic workplace where I thought backstabbing routinely was just a job skill I tried doing it in my new job and people hated me when I realized that's just not how people treat each other.

I don’t like backstabbing in general. My prefer method has always been pushing someone under the bus when it’s crowded so that they can’t trace back it’s me.
Sounds like a talent

never really did it but hated that one time when my manager didn't have my back in front of some other people, pissed me off so much especially because i did everything right (and the dude at fault was on vacation)

I was backstabbed in high school by my best friend at the time and I never spoke to her again when I found out (wasn’t easy because we also went to the same college). Since then, it’s been a rule of mine to never do it and to never trust anyone that does it. Has served me well since.

People using my health issues against me to advance themselves, the "amazing learning opportunity" and you realize they just thought you'd be the perfect scape goat etc... But that was in my early years and I've learned since then. I don't backstab but I tell straight to the person I'll get justice when and where they expect it the least, or someone else will for me because I'm going to make the situation known and when their dying on the side of the road, gasping and asking for help, I'll just be watching with popcorns. Now people don't backstab me anymore because they don't know what to expect from someone who'd tell them that in public :)
It's hard to know for sure when you're being backstabbed, but if people are really ganging up against you behind the scenes, there's not a lot you can do.
Reputation defense becomes a full time job and, if you already have 60 hours of other stuff to do, you can't do it without your performance at your job suffering giving more ammo to use against you.
It really sucks that people are like this.

I had my fair share of backstabbing attempts against me in more than 10 years.
I actually never backstabbed unless I got confirmation being backstabbed, call it returning the favor.
A few memorable ones:
- as a BA for a recommandations improving by design security 😂 I contributed to the summoned integrator challenge meeting.
😂 Client decision: project cost-killing made live after challenging the integrator, client PMO resigned live, successful PMI 2 years later. What an IT DD 😂
🤣 Outcome for me: got a headhunter PMO offering for this client 2 months after, got promoted after switching to a different company.
- as a junior consultant, from a client that tried to do it in public by calling for its n+3, he got humiliated publicly in front of peers 3 times in a row, budget cut included.
😂 Client decision: budget cutoff.
🤣 Personnal outcome: got promoted 😂 got awarded 🤣 got incentivized, got praised by client business line, what else? 🤣
- as a SC, part 1, double backstabbing from a business partner and competitor.
🤣 outcome, part 1: nailed the engagement, client promoted, I left and switched to ICT strategy 🤣
😂 Client decision, part 1: team awarded, client promoted to strategic initiatives.
Personnal outcome: got public excuse from my former MD a few years later. so what 😂?
- as a SC, part 2, square the double backstabbing by adding a fellow and a client´s colleague backstabbings.
Client decision: client colleague put on PIP with budget cut by 75%, client promoted, competitor cost killed, decision of competitor cost killing made public before I left 🤣 competitor got nailed on spot and that brought a good laughing session to the team 😂 challenge accepted 😂
Personal outcome: no negative ones, so what? 🤣
- as a SC, got several backstabs in a row from a lead consultant pushed outside his comfort zone by my arrival.
Client decision: requested me fulltime, requested to increasing my day rate by a nearly 1/6th, lead got cleaned from budget, got the lead, project got cost killed by CIO.
Outcomes : got internal support from fellow and partnership, lead got a strong verbal notice, I was not promoted, my collegue was promoted but seem to be burnt out since then, my former company is struggling to hire currently. 🤣
- a former client, PM level with PD title (YOY CPI and SPI=0 prior I stepped in 🤣), backstabbed me by mailling my MD while publicly praising me. Project got handed to internal consulting for performance remediation process, and our internal fellow raised the issue to his SP in no time. Escalation was already getting hot when I left (got cc’ed when C-level started stepping in, internal fellows used the lever I was prevented to use), I guess that unfortunately client failed to match his title’s expectations...
Client decision: client PM/PD fired.
Personal outcome: Briefed internal fellow with excellent feedback, debriefed my former MD and again got an excellent feedback. Now free and having manager level interviews, applications and props. So what? 🤣
Lesson learnt: having a few enemies is ok but chose them well. Guess, a few people picked the wrong person when picking me 🤣
I should definitely write a book, guess that dance with the devil could be a proper title.
What book title would you pick?

Playing the player ; pay them back properly ; sucking the backstabbing out of them gracefully ; and yes you should write a book lol

Linking this to the confession abt the intern who got fired because he asked the ladies to sleep with him while outside of office perimeter! The perfect example of backstabbing, a group one, like Julius Caesar!

I’ve never stabbed anyone in the back and although I have experienced what I would consider betrayal it’s never risen to the level of backstabbing.
I dont like backstabbing - front is where it’s at. Push em and move up, Thats what I say 🤡

Oh I’ve done some backstabbing. Not going to elaborate because it was in high school and also it may constitute a felony.
