I had to take lateral moves at manager and senior manager, but I’m about to move directly from AD to D in less than two years. Sometimes you just need to be in the right place at the right time.
Sadly not sometimes but most times. I’ve found the jump to Director to be the hardest. Sadly I’m seeing lots of directors doing lateral moves due to constant reshuffling and they somehow take priority over more qualified candidates at AD level
It depends on your situation. I feel like today’s market is mostly lateral movement unless you’re some in demand AI person or some other specialized thing.

So, irrespective of current market, there is a huge difference between moving as AD vs moving as SD. It's way easier to get D positions for AD but most SD had to move laterally before VP position. Atleast that's been my experience and also my friends and coworkers who have moved multiple times within big pharma
It might be very challenging and risky to move around this year.
