If it's actually snowy I wear boots to the office and then change my shoes when I get there. If it's just cold and old crunchy snow I just wear my regular shoes. Youll learn how to do the "walk" - you don't push off your back foot. You pull your back foot toward your front foot otherwise you're on your arse.
Yes, this! Perfect description, also taught to my children in school as “walk like penguin”!
I just keep work shoes in my bag and wear my flip flops, sneakers, rain boots or snow boots in and out of the office.
I wear my blundstones all winter, if I have to dress nicer than that I’ll just wear them on my commute and then change shoes at the office but I think depending on the pair you can make blundstones work for business casual
Edit: also biggest thing I learned moving from the south to the Midwest is to walk like a penguin when it’s snowy/icy. You can never trust that the sidewalk isn’t actually slippery and taking smaller steps will save your ass (literally)
I also suggest blundstones. I think they are nice to wear in casual or business casual settings, and they are very comfortable. I'm kind of surprised they haven't caught on more.
I leave work appropriate shoes in the office and invest in good boots for the commute.
Most city sidewalks will not have packed snow, but slush will accumulate at the curb. Parking lots will likely have snow & slush. Salt will destroy leather, so even in Chicago, nobody expects their accountant to show up with dress shoes in the middle of winter.
Let’s say that you have commuted into the city wearing boots (think hiking boots with a waterproof sole extending as high as the laces) and you’re calling on a prospect in the city. The cab will drop you at the curb - or you may walk there - either way, slush will be ankle-deep at the curb. You could wear rubber overshoes over the semi-dressy shoes you changed into at the office, and take those off at your destination when you hang your coat, scarf and hat in the reception area closet. Just realize that your hands are going to get dirty pulling off those overshoes. An alternative is to wear shoes with a rubber sole, maybe higher than a normal sole.
Midwesterners are very practical about winter attire because fashion will not keep you warm. “There is no bad weather, just bad choices in clothing”. Get a winter coat that will cover your butt (men) or knee length or lower (women). Don’t wear a ski jacket. If you need to shop in advance for coats & boots, check out Lands End or LLBean, not Eddie Bauer. Don’t forget hat & scarf.
Get a pair of Chelsea boots to bridge most days, but give in to proper boots (start with Kamiks if you're on a budget) on icy or snowy days. A bad fall or broken bones isn't worth looking good or saving money.
Fully acceptable to wear snow boots and switch in office. Just bring an extra pair of socks fyi, keep everything tucked neatly under desk. Watch for black ice, be prepared to catch yourself. So don’t keep your phone in your hands or back pocket haha

I agree with wearing boots for the commute and having a couple of pairs of shoes at your office. You don't want to fall on black ice which is definitely possible. Especially if you just experienced any type of snowstorm. You definitely need a heavy coat, scarf and hats. I would also ask my colleagues for suggestions. Having previously lived in Massachusetts for most of my life, I always made sure to have backups for all seasons but especially during the winter season. You may not be able to wear the same coat, boots, hat or scarf after a significant snowstorm.
I’ve never found a good solution to this when I was looking.
As of now, I either change into nice shoes at the office, or wear sneakers or something with a rubber sole. We have a pretty casual dress code if we aren’t meeting clients, so as long as we look presentable we have wide latitude. I’d be surprised if most Midwest offices aren’t the same. Most of the people that work at the investment firm near my office dress similarly - maybe slightly more in pants vs jeans.
The roads and parking lots here get cleaned pretty fast though.
If all else fails, a stiletto heel will function similar to an ice pick lol! Just remember to keep your weight on your heel and not your toe!
I live in Minnesota. The winter weather here is nasty😔. I wear boots to the office from Oct to May. Once I get to the office, I switch my boots out for dress shoes 👠.
What?!?! October isn’t that bad. We don’t get snow until November most of the time.

Wow lots of suggestions thanks all!
