Sounds brutal, but think of the rewards…the spontaneous collaborative opportunities and that elusive CULTURE.
Don’t get me started..!! 3WTC atmosphere is much like working in a call center.
Yes take it! So you can go to the office to talk to people on zoom.
This!
40mins, 2-3 times a week. 2hrs one way would be brutal.

Congrats on the job offer. Take it but start looking again in January.
As soon as the the election is over and the new new administration ramps up to take office, hopefully the market will open up again so that we can all leave these archaic agencies forcing RTO for companies smart enough to offer WFH.
Companies wise enough to do WFH will no doubt benefit b/c they’ll be getting the best talent, plus since people are willing to do WFH for a little less salary, it’ll be win-win for these businesses.

Consider that 2 hours is your optimal commute.
If one of those steps gets delayed, the entire chain gets thrown off considerably.
Otherwise, I do
Waaalk / train / train / subway / waaaaaalk
But also I’m dead inside.
Yup. Today actual time was 2hr 13. : (
I’m doing 2 hours each way to commute to Toronto, also 3x per week. Traffic is the worst it’s ever been downtown and the only reliable way in is the train. I have a 55 min drive to the station, then it’s an hour on the train to get to the city, then a 15 min walk to the office. The mornings are fine- I blink and I’m at work. The evenings are harder but doable. I will occasionally leave work at 4pm when possible/if I have no meetings, and work my last hour on the train which makes a huge difference. Good books or audiobooks are an absolute must. Same with podcasts. I’ll call a long distance friend during my drive home sometimes to stay in touch and fill the time. Tbh you fall into a routine and I’m lucky that I have a partner who easily handles dinner and evening chores on the days that I commute. My advice is the take the job and try it out, it might not be as horrible as you expect.
About 100 minutes. I can’t believe I did it every day for decades before remote/hybrid work.
Living one block away from NJ commuter line with midtown direct, it still takes me probably 80 minutes to get in. I do it twice a week
So walk 5 minutes>train 35-45 minutes depending on what kind of day NJT is having (could be more)>walk>subway>walk>office
I would strongly consider the salary offer and what that cost is to commute. It costs me roughly $44 a week on commuting, not including coffee/lunch.
Yes I could bring coffee and a lunch box and add more weight to the amount of shit I have to carry to the office as we have a 'free for all' sitting arrangement with no permanent space to keep any belongings and no guarantee that keyboards or mice work. Also the in office coffee machine where I work is so gross it's undrinkable! That's just my experience, but for sure there's people that push that koolaid
I’m always so surprised when people think 2 hours is a long commute. My dad and everyone who lived in the same area we did - all drove 30 minutes to the train station, took a 2-hr. train ride into NYC and walked another 15-20 minutes to their agencies or companies - a minimum of 5 days a week. People read on the train and the time passed quickly. It gave them a chance to prepare for their day and decompress at night.
I commuted 40 minutes on the train 5 days a week with a 20 minute walk to the agency. Other people drive 2- 3 hours - every day!

I’m always surprised when people think anything over a 30 min commute is okay.
Just b/c my father did it doesn’t make it okay.
Just b/c I used to commute 90 minutes myself doesn’t make it okay.
Especially since technology makes working from home possible.
I used to have to work 18 hour days and weekends as a junior writer. So it’s okay for other juniors to work the same now? Your reasoning is terribly flawed.

I’m in Northern NJ. When I worked in the city it was a 15 minute drive to the train station, then a 1.5 hour train ride, then a 15-20 minute subway ride. All in all it was about 2 hours each way per day. I did it for 6 months, quit that job and then promised myself I would never work in NYC again. 4+ hours of commuting every day is not the life I want to live.

One thing management forgets is, even before Covid (when everybody showed up) the office environment was sleepy. Robots staring at screens. Zero personality/vibes. It's the way it is now. ~GenX

Also consider the bus going home.
If it’s out of port authority, there’s often a line, that’ll cause you to wait 2-3 busses
Omg I didn’t even consider that aspect.
I’d have to be paid A LOT for 12 commuting hours per week
Only if the salary bump is truly worth it. Even 2-3x a week in the office can be tiring with such a commute, not to mention the cost of gas and bus/train fare. Good opportunity to catch up on podcast though!

I’ve tried so many things… don’t get me started on the ferry. Also I live 20 mins away with no traffic, so I thought to myself: bike across the George Washington bridge….. showed up to work a hot and sweaty mess / rode back in the pouring rain. I’ve carpooled, nightmare with creative hours, you WILL get left behind. There’s a shady system of laborer vans that goes into the city, I got sat on a makeshift plywood chair over a wheel well, I’m 6ft 3, knees to my chest. Drywall dust everywhere, Cash only.
At the end of the day, you just can’t win.
Following.
Just completed a live test run: 2hr 13 min door to door, one way. 😭
There are two subways lines involved and the switch & wait time was the unpredictable factor.
I work at 3 WTC, have about a 70 -80 min commute one way. It’s horrible. That’s one bus and one or two trains, depending on whether the first train goes express or not. Can’t tell you what to do, but you wanted advice. If that’s your best option take it but keep looking for something else with a shorter commute. More and more companies are also forcing more time in the office, so you could also wind up with that turning into 4 or 5 days in the office in the near future.
Takes me an hour and 40 each way from Jersey to 3 WTC. Walk bus subway. I’ve found the fastest to be 2 or 3 train then one stop on the 1 to WTC if you’re coming from Penn or Port Authority. Have tried other ways but this seems the fastest.
I have been doing this for about two years. (~4hrs back and forth)
Home> car> nj trans> path> office
By the time you get home from rush hour, it’s 7:30-8pm.
Its rough.
Drained from commuting,
Drained from working in office.
🙁
Which part of NY will be in? Is there possibility for you to move to the city center?
Live in NJ with family & kids. Work would be in NYC/3wtc
(Moving not an option because I’m not independently wealthy. )
