For people with clean records -what’s the rationale for waiting until a background check to clear before giving notice? I keep seeing it mentioned but I what’s the risk? To my knowledge it’s not like a cleared background check protects you from your new firm rescinding an offer…is the goal to minimize gaps between paychecks?

Human error.

Exactly - I've been vetted more thoroughly than by an employer background check, but, what do you know, something was messed up on my last one and delayed the approval by a couple days, and someone reached out for more information from me. Could have been much worse also caused my human error.

You have nothing to gain from giving notice, so why do it earlier than you need to? Don't put the cart before the horse. Wait for the check to clear and then you can let your employer know

the not eligible for rehire happens a lot for whatever internal reason. i have heard that some companies will immediately walk you out after you give notice. if you have a hiccup like above, you may have problems.

You never know - my college had me down as not graduating (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and I never found that out until my background check for Deloitte, because no other company I’ve worked for looked into it to confirm my transcript/degree. Took 6 weeks of back and forth with the registrar to get it cleared up and get my start date set.

“Clean” can be relative. For example, I was once on a USPS project that didn’t want anyone who had been out of the country more than a total of 6 months over the last 5 years.

Exemptions were allowed, but it was super annoying for hiring out of college, hiring international resources, etc

I worked at a restaurant in college for one summer that has had a lot of turnover since. During a background check, a new manager that never interacted with me told the background check people that I was “not eligible for rehire”. This prompted back and forth between me and the background check group to resolve this. Extended my onboarding timeline

Should say that I was a valued employee and built some great relationships with my coworkers. I still dine there and sometimes if a team members notices me I’ll get a free dessert or food item

Exactly C1. I left off short tenure lifeguarding jobs with companies and bosses I could not remember today. No problems or questions asked about those, lol

Is it unreasonable to request superiors to be mindful of their language? For example, I was on a call where someone meant to say “organized” but instead said their team member suffered from mental illness (OCD). Since this mental illness is invisible, it felt risky to say it not knowing who on the call might be affected. Thoughts?

We emailed a bit back and forth and now he said he can have a call with me…. I’m so nervous…! Idk what kinda things to even talk about? They HAVE to know I’m looking for a job, but idk how to be sly about that?? It seems like they’d be taking a risk on me due to my background not being very standard…

When calculating YOE, if you are working 2 jobs, can you double count those years? For reference, I’ve been an Army Reserves officer for the last 5 years since coming off active duty, and spend about 30-40 hours per month (outside of 2-4 week annual training) on that job. So it’s not like driving Uber, it’s a high stress/very involved job. Technically I have 7 years Active Army + 5 years D + 5 Years reserves if I count them. Don’t know if there’s any practical reason just curious peoples opinion
