Controversial question to Partners: do you take race into consideration when staffing projects? (e.g. avoid sending black consultant to Alabama client if other project is available in NY)

Not a partner but a colleague I was taking a project over from was hesitant sending me in front of client in the rural Midwest because I am not white and the client was supposedly slightly prejudiced. The colleague wasn’t white either

The project was in trouble and client was very unhappy with the mentioned person.

We ended up not only fixing it but the client was so happy that we received subsequent business from them. Same person on the client side from beginning to end.

As a southerner I find the stereotype that “Alabama” or the south is more racist than the rest of the country, or the world for that matter, offensive. The south is a very diverse place where people have been working through these issues for generations. In general, I find that most* southerners today are far better equipped to deal with racism and diverse groups of people than people from areas of the country who for some reason feel that racism doesn’t exist there.

like

Very much agree and I'm from the northern Midwest. I couldn't believe how diverse (and progressive) Atlanta was the last time I was there. One of my strongest team members is actually a Sikh raised in Alabama who graduated 10+ years ago. She has nothing but good things to say about the south.

I’ve seen more overt racism in the Northeast than in the South during my career. Just saying.

likeupliftinghelpful

Not taking offense but the South isn’t nearly as racist as people think, especially the individuals you’d be working with in the corporate world vs less educated circles. I grew up in AL. It has an ugly past, but I’m still surprised at how many people miss the irony of generalizations like OPs hypothetical.

like

Agree with above. Keep in mind that racism often declines with education. Most individuals that we interact with, regardless of geography, are more educated and in my experience (15+ years) couldn't give a shit what color you are as long as you can fix their problem.

Very good question, and very sad to think that we need to make these considerations in 2020. But it definitely happens.

like

I have never staffed projects that way. I have seen clients act in culturally insensitive ways, such as assigning Anglicized names to Indian people rather than trying to correctly pronounce them. Fortunately in my experience I’ve never encountered overt/malicious racism.

I honestly think in general in the US, racism has declined pretty significantly over recent decades, including the last few years. I expect the people who grew up with strong racist views are starting to reach retirement age and the younger generations are much more accepting of racial diversity.

I’m know there are exceptions and some geographies are likely worse than others, but in general I think we’ve come a long way and the trend is still positive.

I couldn't join an agricultural land PE project because they don't believe I can speak the same language with the farm owners in Carolina. I'm Asian btw

like

I also wonder if there are some interesting trends in terms of performance feedback from clients. For example, client X has complained about 8 consultants over the years and it turns out they’re all brown.

like

As a black person that grew up in NC and has traveled throughout the south, I encountered the most racism in Pittsburgh and Boston.

like

Not a partner but was part of a big engagement in Alabama actually... We were all sorts of races in the team - white, Indian, Black, Asian. Client sponsors were mostly white.

like

We’ve had specific training to avoid that and instruction to call it out if we see it. Of course I’m sure it still happens wether intentionally or not.

like

Yes esp. if the resource has a heavy accent

like

If partners know the client will have a racial prejudice for sure - most will either decline the work these days , or if they really need it - then make sure there is a match in the staffing . It’s a lot different today than even ten years ago

The people who choose to take an online implicit bias test alone would likely make it not a representative sample. It also says nothing substantial about what scientific controls were used, implying to me there may be none.

The type of test you’re describing also may be measuring what is essentially biologically based bias, that may not match actual racist beliefs or behaviors.

Cultural fit does play into personnel selection...I personally don’t look at race, but I do look at style, tone, personality, bedside manner etc.

Seen it first hand.

First, partners almost never staff projects. They usually rely on their designated SM’s to do this. Second, SM’s often delegate the first and sometimes final cut staffing decisions to a junior team member they trust. In my case, my trusted junior team member is aware of my staffing preferences and behaves accordingly. Race/ethnicity is NEVER a vector, but I do very often encourage preferential treatment be given to women because we are working in technology—our next generation of technologists should representative, so I proactively shove that into being to the best of my ability. Honest answer.

Small caveat: I thought this was in the Deloitte bowl where my response is extremely accurate. I can’t speak for other firms, so please don’t construe my comments to be universally applicable.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

Do McKinsey (or other MBB) projects always only have one EM staffed on a project? I know that’s how their pricing is structured, but curious if some projects can be top heavy.
