I was in your shoes a few years ago; I know it feels terrible but I promise persistence is key. I applied to almost 70 jobs as a fresh grad. I was so close to giving up my advertising dreams, and even accepted another job I didn’t want because I thought I didn’t have what it takes/there was something wrong with me. It took me 4 months of constant applying to even get an interview at an agency, and it was the ONLY interview I got. It was a super tiny local agency in my hometown; no huge clients and it had a low starting salary, but they took a chance & offered me the AAE position. I thought I only wanted a big NYC agency but figured it’d be good just to get my foot in the door at this place and I could leave for something bigger in a year. However, it ended up being an amazing job and I stayed almost 3 years. They let me try out lots of roles (like strategy & PM) & work with different clients, I had fantastic colleagues, they gave me my first 2 promotions, and I absolutely loved it there.
So my advice: try to find some smaller regional agencies. They’ll let you try out lots of things, lots of clients, and you’ll find some great people along the way. And when you’re ready to move on to bigger & better things they’ll help you get there & cheer you on. :)
That is where I am at right now... I am currently an AAE at the newspaper here in my hometown and I hate it here. It is sucking the life out of me and everyone here is 40-50 years older than me. I mainly work with local retail stores and handle some national accounts like 5-hour energy for new-hire positions. I am getting some experience and have a "title" to put on my resume. I am just ready to get out of my homophobic racist hometown and jump into a role where I am actually doing the work and live in a city where I can be me.
Is there a particular reason you’re set on being an AAE? Also, did you do any internships while in school, and if so, what type of internship?
When I started the job hunt there were a lot of different positions I was interested in, but brand management was definitely top of mind. I stumbled into the niche I work in now, and I honestly love it (PPC). I never would’ve thought this would end up being my career, but my agency was willing to hire and train me as a fresh grad, and the job sounded pretty cool to me. Since I had a stats/math-based background with decent Excel/R/Tableau knowledge, that allowed me to differentiate myself a bit more than I could make a case for in other niches.
Perhaps try to apply for other types of marketing roles and get a sense of what niches you can stand out in. I think it could really open your options up! Best of luck!
It's my ideal, go-to position that got me interested in the industry. I've looked into strategy, buying, and selling. I wait to hear back but the response never comes. I've applied in other industries so I can get interview practice and have received jobs that I have turned down because it's just not where I want to start out.
Ngl I’ve been feeling the same exact way for art direction. Idk why it’s so hard to break in? Hopefully my new portfolio helps 🤷🏾♀️
Take another internship in the mean time.
I've been looking into these as well! They're a little tricky but definitely an option I am open to. especially if it is paid.
Assistant Account Executive
McCann NY is looking for an AAE and Account Sup as I type
January is a good time to begin and lots of our agencies want an AAE! But I’m a boring pharma person
Thanks! Just applied for it. I've searched for positions like that for a while now and have been waiting for a response but hear nothing back. Hopefully this time!
Typically AAEs are hired as interns from my experience so it might be worth applying to a paid internship if financially you can swing it.
I also was dead set on being an AAE but lacked faith in myself and took my first job in media planning. Weirdly it was incredibly difficult to transition even at the most junior level so If you are passionate, give it more time. I made it my job everyday to reach out to 3-4x recruiters and it took maybe 4-5x months but it did happen eventually! It’s truly just a numbers game.
This time of year is a bit tough too so I would recommend reaching back out to your connects in the new year and reminding them you are still very much eager and available!
This is exactly where I am at. I sent out a note to all the people I have networked with this year before Thanksgiving, thanking them to connect and for the time they took out of their day to do a zoom meeting with me and updated them on where I am at. Waiting is literally the hardest part. Thank you for the words of encouragement!!
I would start in project management and then transition to account. Easy transition and it will get you into the industry
I know it is different for every agency but when I look at the job descriptions there is not a lot of clarification on the difference between project and account. Could you enlighten me?
I'm in the EXACT same shoes with you... I'd love to connect with you and go through this with someone if you're open to it :)
Did you find a gig yet 😭
