Learn from the movie Point Break (Keeanu version). Surfers are territorial, so you need to go to the beach, find the biggest, strongest surfer, knock them out and take their board. Only then will you be allowed on the beach.
Just go to la Jolla shores or tourmaline, buy a foam board form Costco or wherever and practice riding white water waves. Id recommend a lesson too. Also recommend getting a 4/3 wetsuit. O'Neil epic back zip is great to start with.
I moved from Chicago just last year with my boyfriend. He took up surfing quicker than me and asked a lot of advice from his friends who have been doing it awhile + follows IG pages for tips. Even went as far as signing up for an app that shows him cameras of each beach.
My favorite spot is dog beach in ocean beach because it’s home to a lot of beginners and even kids taking lessons some days. Can touch the bottom in most of the water. Started on a “wave storm” foam board we got on offer up. In the late summer it’s warm enough for just a rash gaurd, but I do a 3/2 wet suit for spring/early summer.
If I do see a more seasoned surfer, I try to stay out of their way. I’ve heard horror stories about them getting so mad they dunk your head under! I stay to dog beach and tourmaline and haven’t had issues.
All that ^ and I’m still working on a proper pop up 😅
Southwestern College offer a 10 week surfing class on Saturdays from 8:30am - 11:20am and they surf in Coronado. It's quite inexpensive and the instructors are really good. I think the next class start on June 6.
Im signing up for this in August!
It takes a tremendous amount of time to get even decent. Get yourself a wetsuit because you should be going out at 6am. Don’t mess with people who have been surfing the same spot for 25 years. And then try and learn from someone who has been surfing for decades. They see the ocean different than you and have a well learned expertise on where to be, when and why. Even just watching, listening and learning will be important.
Can’t speak to lessons, but I went with friends the first few times then went as much as possible with or without them. I’m not good
My friends who turned out to be kooks taught me, with some words of wisdom from Mitch at self named surf shop. I bought a board from him. Find the right spot, la Jolla shores and tourmaline are friendly. A few years later took lessons from surf diva with a couple new to San Diego and think that I should have started there. Have fun!
I took lessons, and even then it was a steep learning curve. I'm not super coordinated, though, so that didn't help.
I recommend YouTubing some surfing tutorials, see how you do based on that and if you don’t mind spending the extra funds I’d def recommend taking lessons. If you don’t live walking distance to the water, Bringing a board, parking, and posting up at the beach is a hassle so best to make the most of each trip and take the quickest path of getting better
I started out in a surf camp type of things, about 5 lessons once a week. Then once I got comfortable I went out with friends and gradually built up my skill until I could go out alone
Try a surf camp in Costa Rica! Witchs Rock is amazing
