Bringing up another person’s salary in your review won’t help you at all. Focus on reminding them what you bring to the company. And get another offer
Also disconcerting that you seem to think this has to do with the fact that the new person is male, as if it couldn’t possibly be for any other reason. But I guess that’s par for the course these days.
^ what they said, except, replace the word deserve with earned, you might think you deserve more than you have really earned compared to others in the marketplace
Maybe he negotiated a higher amount. You can do the same in your review. Tell them what you want to earn in order for them to keep you around.
^ this. No matter how much it makes sense to explain how broken the industry is, you’ll only come off petty. I made the same mistake with
Title and it didn’t go well.
Happiness is found when you stop comparing yourself with others. His penis is not the issue, this happens to everyone. If everybody knew how much everyone else made, most would be upset because there are no universal rules and there is no such thing as fair. There’s always going to be imbalance from the difference in each other’s work histories, prior salary levels, negotiating skills, interviewing skills, and random things like earnings health, personalities, and random whims of different people involved. Focus on yourself, doing your best work, being able to sell yourself, and that will be your path. If this agency isn’t buying it, another will.
If you're at your Dream agency making work you love...it should be fairly easy to get another from another agency. They'll retain you. Then make a promise to yourself that you'll never be blinded by the name of an agency. Don't take less than you deserve (honestly deserve). Agencies, even wonderfully creative agencies, are always going to low ball you and hamper your career growth (title and raises) regardless of your gender. So, eyes wide open and get what you deserve or move on.
The only thing is that I’m at my dream job making work I love, and I don’t want them to think it’s laughable for me to throw out a $20 k raise during the first 8 months at a new job in order to be better paid/valued
^Well said Director 1
How do you know the person’s salary?
I have negotiated a lot of salaries of my own and hiring. I have been on both sides of finding out you left money on the table and know I make 25k more than an equally qualified writing partner. I was able to level set it multiple times without threats or quitting. I would say 8 months is probably too soon to say your valuable enough for a 20k raise. If your killing it I would bring up what your target salary or bump is and ask what has to happen to get there. Do months before your review. By the time a review is done the money is set and its hard to change.
If you have a good relationship with your boss it is completely acceptable to be honest and say, I love working here, can you help me stay at a competitive salary and what has to happen to make it real. It may take 18 months - I also learned there are no rules that can’t altered for good people who speak up.
