I’ve been on the interviewer side for about a year now. I appreciate honesty and being up front with what you are looking for. However, when someone is overly negative about their last job, you have to remember I wasn’t there. I don’t know if you were the problem or if the job was. Keep it focused on what you are looking for and how that helps you do the job.
Showing you are positive and forward-thinking comes off much better. Leaves less to the imagination and hopefully proves a better culture fit than coming in negative and talking about everything that has gone wrong in the past.
I agree with Manager 1—don’t say anything negative about past jobs because it automatically reflects poorly on you. You can mention that you’re looking for better work-life balance, but avoid framing it as criticism of your previous employers.
Agreed, it is also telling of the way a candidate would react when eventually something bad or unforeseen happens. Because it will happen, and do you want a proactive and helpful teammate or a resentful and bitter one?

Honesty is fine. Framing is what matters.
“I'm burned out and exhausted” → raises concerns about energy / risk
“I’m looking for a healthier pace / more sustainable environment” → reads as self-awareness
Recruiters typically interpret this less emotionally than candidates expect. It becomes a fit conversation, not a character judgment.
