The recruiter’s themselves can’t negotiate. They’re just the messengers. They’ll relay what you ask for and then the hiring manager will decide if that’s within the range they’re allocated. Then they’ll tell the recruiter so they get back to you. And back and forth like that.

When talking to a recruiter or even the hiring manager themselves, if they ask me about salary expectations, I always say something like “I’m sure you guys already have a budget allocated for this position. Would you mind sharing the range?” That way, you avoid all this stupid dancing and negotiating and get right down to the nitty gritty of how much they have and if that’s something you’re ok with. If it isn’t, there probably isn’t much they can do, unless they say they can or they’re at least willing to try.
Depends on the size of a company. My salary bands range $35k. If we can't match on salary, I'll toss extra vacation if I really want the candidate and we're not worlds apart.
There is no getting in trouble. There is typically a range they know they have to work within. Usually anything outside that range is a hard no, unless there’s a rare set of circumstances. It sets a bad precedent and they don’t have much to offer come time for annual reviews if you’re at the top of or above the range.
Yes, DDM. Most companies have a range that correlates to the role. And most of them stick to that range in order to maintain parity and allow for growth. If they REALLY want you they might offer a hiring bonus (yes they still exist).
If you feel that you are not being compensated for your experience and they won’t budge on salary, ask for a review, including eligibility for an increase in 6 months.
