Genuinely curious why some people do M&A, JVs, and “corporate strategy” work. Isn’t that paper-pushing you could have done without going to law school? Seems like low end of the totem pole…

Genuinely curious what you think is “real lawyer work”?

likefunny

Much more fun and interesting than commercial work. You definitely don't need a JD to do that. Just get a fresh college grad or even intern

corporate drones from those firms can easily be replaced by Harvey AI. pumping out excel or ppl slides or developing corporate strategy can all be done via AI

wow the Corporate Strategy is playing Devils Advocate now. Tbh lawyers are all overpriced yappers and paper pushers - we do not create anything of value

I mean let’s be honest, if I weren’t worth it, my hourly rate wouldn’t be 1,300 as a mid level. And my firm’s rates aren’t even close to the rates some of my opposing counsel charge. And I do a mix of ECVC and M&A at a tech focused biglaw firm headquartered in SV.

I don’t know what you think the practice of law is, but news flash: it’s all paper pushing.

Genuinely asking: are you a first year?

like

lol what? I've never done one of these deals and there isn't an attorney on the other side. Low end of the totem pole. What's your area of practice? What is the pinnacle of the legal practice? Literally all of it can be distilled down to paper pushing.

Idk that I would lump M&A into this. There’s a reason that work commands some of the highest hourly rates in the legal industry.

Guys, sorry this post was made in response to the corporate strategy troll.

I'm trying to figure out how to pivot out of my current job. My department is in utter chaos, which has just become completely unmanageable. I'm looking for front-end web design work, and work from home. I am a strong designer and basically set up landing pages for large companies on a proprietary CMS in our company. If anyone knows of places I could apply? I'm not trying to reinvent myself as I do artwork on the side and would rather grow that business and get out of the chaos of fortune 500.

What is a reasonable pay increase + bonus? This will be my first pay increase. I make 70k and I will be starting my second year at big law (immigration). I had 2 years of prior experience before joining the firm. My manager rated me highest in all areas and mentioned she recommended me for promotion but it may not happen until next cycle since there are limited number of promotions to give. I will get a pay increase regardless so I want to negotiate in case I don’t get a “good” increase.

Protocol for responding (or not) to unsolicited emails from recruiters to your work email? In other words, is it acceptable to just ignore without a response? Or do you prefer to keep the line open with a brief “thanks for thinking of me, I am not interested at this time but hope we can collaborate in the future.”

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? I’ve gathered professional references from opposing attorneys and other attorneys we work with but still can’t land. Help
