Part of it for me is an exercise in self-awareness. Very seldom am I blindsided by a piece of feedback or criticism because I generally have a good idea of where I made a mistake or how I can improve. I think taking the element of surprise out of it can help soften the blow.
It's more how you get the feedback. There is two parts "Criticism" and "Support" both need to be high. If you get criticised and it feels meaningless or unchangable then you are not going to improve. If you only get Support without understand the why then you going to get an inflated ego. You need to ask for feedback as 1 thing you are known for. 1 thing you did really exceptional that year/quarter/month. 2 things you did not do well and how they feel you should improved on those attributes. The key to ask them to clarify why they feel that way and what support they are willing to give for you to improve.
